How would you rate is eye discipline? It might be my imagination but it does seem like he stares down his intended target.
Ever since we traded for him I’ve watched a fair amount of his throws both with the cardinals and with UCLA. And sometimes he does seem to stare down his target a bit, but what I have noticed is that this is sort of offset by two things, number one he has a quick release, and number two, he seems to prefer the deep routes. He seems to prioritize watching the deeper routes develop 1st and when he is successful he unleashes a laser with a quick release. So, even though he is staring down that route, his quick release and the velocity he puts on the ball as well as his focus on the deeper route(s) seems to negate some of the risk of him zeroing in on a certain receiver or route. Some of the throws seem ill advised, which isn’t uncommon for QBs who can thread the needle, however there are also some other times where you do see him go through his 2nd and 3rd progression.
One thing the NE offense does is they use Tight Ends, Hbacks/Fullbacks etc. in the passing game a lot. Both to pass protect, help in the run game, and in the pass game for passes down the seam and out of the flat. If you look at the FB and RB we drafted, both of those guys Can run, block, and catch, so I would imagine that the coaching staff will work with rosen to develop a short and quick passing game that takes advantage of the tight ends and backs to go along with his deep ball, make the defense defend every blade of grass and keep them off balance. This could also help schematically with some of the weaknesses or uncertainty of our Oline by having FB, RB, & TE who can block and help with protection and then roll out and catch a pass out of the backfield, whether it’s a screen or a dump off or down the seam. Then again, every man has a plan until he gets punched in the face as Mike Tyson says.
However, unlike Tannehill, I don’t think throwing deep in terms of preference or accuracy will be a problem as long as he has enough protection to allow the route to develop and get the ball off before he gets clobbered.
I’ve totally changed my perspective on this coming season, I’m excited to see what we have here.
