The Manning Family Influence On Oliver and Andrew Luck's Decision-Making

Imagine that it's week 15 and the two teams neck and neck in the running for the #1 pick are Miami and Jacksonville.

And people on this board want me to believe he would be rooting for Jacksonville to get him.

Point taken - that's of course unless LA has already locked up the Jacksonville move. Ditto AZ and the miserable Bidwells.

However, IMO, it's a different scenario if we're vying with either/or Denver/Indy.

Unless Peyton Manning retires before the draft, I can't imagine he would want to go to Indy. Why would he want to sit for basically his entire rookie contract behind Manning? Peyton's contract makes him virtually untradeable. The Colts would have to cut him. Plus, remember that Eli wanted to go to New York because AJ Smith is a dip****? Well, what do you think about Bill Polian?

Denver? John Fox is a coaching dinosaur and Elway has NO experience as a personnel guy. That was a braindead hire and that team is a bigger trainwreck than we are, IMO. Look at what happened last season with Josh McDaniels. Denver is definitely not a model organization. I don't buy that Luck would love to play for Denver just because Elway also went to Stanford.

All I'm saying is that objectively, Miami is actually a pretty attractive destination, and fans of other teams who are talking about this same issue definitely feel that way too.

A lot will depend on who Ross brings in to run the team and who is coaching. This is a possibility and the most likely destination would be Denver. The Luck's already have a relationship with Elway which obviously give them some leverage. If this happens you work out a deal in which they select your franchise guy after you select Luck. Then Luck is traded for your guy and 2 firsts and a second. If no deal is reached, you draft Luck and let him sit.

I am sure Ross and the front office will be in close contact with Oliver regarding what Andrew would like to see done as far as drafting and other acquisitions.

Elway and Luck have a personal relationship.

I still don't buy that he wants to play for Denver because of that. Denver is in worse shape than we are, IMO, and Elway is in over his head.

Pat Bowlen is a time tested owner who hired an up and coming Shanny, showed a willingness to take a big risk for a potential big gain (although il-conceived) with that whippersnapper Josh Daniels, and has demonstrated a calm, dignified and supportive patience throughout his stable ownership.

As a chain is as strong as its weakest link, bracket what everyone including Oliver Luck knows, or think they know about Steve Ross from what they've seen to date. As icing on the cake, having a fellow alum who happens to be on many lists as one of the 5 greatest QBs of all time mentoring you cannot possibly be construed as a bad thing.

Is Elway going to be his QB coach?

better Elway coming down from atop , dispensing his wisdom, guidance and inspiration Parcells-style daily... than being the recipient of a Todd Bowles or David Lee type's full attention, eh? :idk:

It is starting to seem like the media and fans are starting a campaign to put doubt in Luck's mind about the Dolphins. They are doing everything in their power to paint Miami as some godforsaken franchise with no hope of resurrection. Its absurd, but that is what people are trying to do.

I know right? I didnt see this **** when the lions went 0-16. anyway i think Lucks smart enough to look at that example and see where the lions are at now with stafford running the offense. If i was in his shoes that what i would be looking at.

Well I'm just saying, their coaching staff has done such a bang up job with Orton and Tebow that it might give his psychic daddy a little pause.

If Luck is the player, and person, I believe him to be...he won't pull this kind of crap. If you look at his father's resume and extrapolate that to how he must have raised Andrew...I believe he will have more integrity that 99.9% of any of the players that have come out in the last 20 years...

Also, his family already has power and money...he isn't going to get paid anything different on another team due to the wage scale...so it all comes down to if he is just the type of guy that whines and says, "I only want to play for a winner or I'm taking my ball and going home...." I just don't see it.

Yup. The NJ/NYC/LI media is going bonkers at the thought of the Jets being stuck with Sanchez and Miami having an elite QB.

Fixed it for ya. :d-day:

Since the story was about the 2011 draft, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Moreover, Archie was totally wrong when he advised Eli to shun the Chargers. They turned out to be a whole lot better a whole lot sooner than Archie thought. Eli might be challenging Peyton in the Chargers offense.

Moreover, in NYC, Eli isn't the biggest fish in the endorsement pond. He's probably not the biggest Giant in terms of endorsements. In SD, he'd definitely be the biggest fish in the endorsement pond in all of Socal.

Pat Bowlen is quasi senile right now and that's not my opinion. Great owner but his age is causing some physical problems for him and he's more cash strapped than ever before.
Not sure I see the benefit of being in Elway's shadow our fighting Tim the Tebow's aura in Denver.
John Fox is becoming a proven loser with every game and not as easily scrappable as Miami's leadership.
All that being said Denver is easily a worse situation for Luck than Miami.

There's a huge leap from being a great player to being a great coach, and just as big a leap to being a great GM. Aside from being a HOF player, Elway has done nothing as a coach or GM. Moreover, sometimes being a great player makes it harder to be a great coach or GM because things were a whole lot easier for the great player simply because he had so much more talent. Really talented players seldom take the time to become "students" of the game that great coaches need to be.

Moreover, it usually takes decades of FO experience to become a top GM. Most of the guys who are good GMs were never NFL players. Even if they were, by the time they were in their 30s, they were already involved in FO operations like scouting, administration, etc.

These jobs require different skills and there's not necessarily a strong connection. Parcells was a great HC, but he was nothing special as a GM. I'd say Chuck Knox and Mike Holmgren were both better coaches than they were GMs, too. Bill Polian was never a coach, but he's a dynamite GM. That John Elway was a great QB doesn't mean that he knows anything about building a great team.

Great post, Vaark. You are 100% right.

I think if we hire a good football operations management team and run it by Oliver Luck, we will be fine.

It would take Ross bungling this to mess it up.
