The Manning Family Influence On Oliver and Andrew Luck's Decision-Making

I have my problems with Jon Gruden, but if we have the #1 overall pick and he's our coach I can pretty much guarantee Luck would want to play here.

The current head coach of Stanford -- David Shaw -- worked for Gruden in Philadelphia and Oakland, first as an offensive quality control coach and later as quarterbacks coach. Plus, we'd be running the West Coast, which is what Luck ran in college.

Getting rid of Jeff Ireland I think would also be key. Gruden is familiar with Mike Lombardi from his days in Oakland and Lombardi and Jim Harbaugh (Luck's former coach), are the best of friends.

If the Luck family is truly concerned about Andrew playing here, hiring Gruden and Lombardi would be two hires that would definitely get them on board, imo.

Hmm, that would be interesting... Gruden / Lombardi might work.

This is also such a fluid situation. If 7 or 8 weeks from now we are in the luck sweepstakes, Ross, I at least hope, will be doing his due diligence in finding out what would make luck happy. If we have the number one pick come january and getting gruden or cowher makes luck happy than Ross will be after them I'm sure. The dynamic of this situation will be changing til the end of the season and I have no doubt that if we have the number one pick we will do whatever is needed to make coming to Miami as attractive as possible

Right now I think it's far from a foregone conclusion that we will even have the #1 pick. The problem is really that we have nothing else to talk about. Oh hey, Reshad Jones was out of position again!

Wait, the celebrity ownership and orange carpet don't make Miami attractive for Luck? I know! Strobe lights in the lockerroom!

Did not really think about that, Lombardi would not be a bad choice if we are going the Gruden road.

Where does it say that Peyton stayed in school for his senior year to avoid going to a team that his family didn't want him to go to? I went to school with Peyton (at the same time. no we didn't hang out), and have followed his career. I've never heard this before.

I did think what happened with Eli was a crock.

And he's familiar with scouting West Coast types of players, too. Lombardi learned at the feet of Bill Walsh in the 80s. He also worked for Bill Belicheck in Cleveland (who doesn't run the West Coast, but that kind of familiarity can be useful).

The only problem is he's been out of the game for four years.

I heard an interview with Clayton today and stated Gruden is out of play because of his new contract with ESPN. He also is friends with Oliver Luck ans said a franchise would have to be an absolute disaster for Andrew to go back to school before playing with that team.

What I've heard is that the contract is an extension that doesn't kick in until next year. After it kicks in, Gruden won't be able to take any coaching jobs, but he's still able to take one this offseason if one is offered.

I would love to see the Phins draft Luck. However, if they do have the 1st pick and Luck decides to be difficult, then I pull a Mike Brown. Luck is nothing more than a valuable poker chip. Whoever, wants him would have to overpay to get him.
I wouldn't have a problem with the Phins trading down and picking up Jones and then having 2 2nd rd picks. If its Denver I would make Elway give up 1st and 2nd this yr and a 1st next yr AND Von Miller.

yeah the only thing that makes me nervous is the possiblity of him staying in school for yet another year.

That will certainly mess up Barkley's plans. I think if that does happen, Barkley comes out this year, when I think he really wants to come out next year. He wants 4 full years on his résumé from USC and the spotlight all to himself next year.
