I read this article and it made me sad.:(

''DollFans have created an entire Mythology of Marino to explain this failure. They say he had no defense, no running game, no supporting cast. It sounds good on paper, but it’s just not true. Fortunately, the Cold, Hard Football Facts worship in a different temple, one where raw numbers and reality reign as Zeus and Apollo. They easily debunked the four biggest myths perpetuated by the cult of Dan Marino.''

Blasphemy! How dare you speak ill of Dan Marino!!! Must go order a Papa Johns Pizza to please the god...

This was posted a while back. This guy is an idiot. Some of the things he says might have a little merit but not much. He throws out numbers while completely ignoring circumstance. What good is having the 5th ranked defense or whatever when they let Thurman Thomas run at will on them in the postseason? That's Marino's fault? He didn't elevate his game and jump in on defense and tackle Thurman himself. I love also how he won't mention the 49ers team that beat Marino in 84. This writer truly is an idiot if he thinks Marino ever played on a team with the overall talent of that 49ers dynasty.

Circumstances prevented Marino from winning a Super Bowl. When the Defense was just good enough then they'd get pushed around in the postseason by a running back like thurman thomas or Natrone Means. Yes, the 84 Dolphins were an incredibly talented team, but the 49ers were just more talented. There are so many other seasons where that same Dolphins team wins the Super Bowl. Once again it's the circumstances. Look at the team Elway needed to finally not embarrass himself in a Super Bowl. A 2000 yard RB and a top notch defense all at once. That paired with a weak NFC is what finally did it for him. Where's this guy's article blasting Elway? Don't pay attention to this stupid article that's just looking to rile people up.

Could not have said it better myself Muscle

Dan Marino is a god among mortal men, and was dealt a bad hand from the beginning and the best team he commanded was the 1984 Fins followed closely by the 1994 Fins.

Over the course of Marino's career he had the pieces he needed to start a dynasty but they never came together at the same time. Also blame the trade that sent Clayton to Green Bay, that was a dumb move.

holy bullcrap Batman!!

He had great scoring defenses.....in his Rookie year and in his next to last year!! Wow....what a failure he couldn't win it all as a rookie or in the twighlight of his career! Maybe if you swap Kareem Abdul Jabar for Terrell Davis he would have, no? He had a good D in 1990 too.....4th ranked scoring Defense. We went 12-4. But what happened in the playoffs? the D gives up 44 pts to Buffalo. Of course that was Marino's fault!

He had a runnning game? Really? Can the writer of the article even name a Dolphin back over Marino's career w/o looking it up? I doubt it. Here's an excersise....look at the Dolphins leading rushers over Marino's career and see if they were ever successful anywhere else..........

Result - Kareem Abdul Jabbar ran for 350 yards for Cleveland in 1999. The best all these great runners could ever do outside Miami....where many were default starters...was 350 yards! 2nd place was Mark Higgs who had a whopping 184 yards for Philly in '89. How could Marino lose surrounded be these all-pros?!?

Marino had to carry the team himself?? not entirely true....but those pro bowl numbers are skewed BECAUSE of Marino. He mad Pro Bowl receivers...the only 2 I can think of that he had who were good players anywhere else were Tony Martin and Irving Fryar. How many were O Lineman who got Pro Bowl nods due to playing on a successful offense?? How many of these guys are still in Pro Bowls if Fiedler is under center that whole time?

The last item I can kinda agree with.....he didn't necessarily have his best days in the playoffs.....but that's when you play the best of the best and he was compensating for the complete lack of a running threat more often than not. but a fair critism none the less.

But that overall article....BS!

The guy twisted and distorted numbers in an attempt to make points that had no basis in fact. Sadly, many posters do the same thing on this board on a daily basis.

Oh yeah, this article has a ton of facts, none of them relevant.

So the Dolphins had a great running game before Marino got there, so what? Notice the "writer" doesn't mention a single "great" running back that lined up for the Dolphins during Marino's tenure. Why? Because there were none, zip, zilch, nada, the null set. Instead the Dolphins lined up with the likes of Lorenzo Hampton, Sammy Smith, Mark Higgs, Terry Kirby, Bernie Parmalee, JJ Johnson, John Avery, and K.A. Jabbar (who finally got over 1,000 yards on the ground, but at the expense of doing anything else on offense). Name a single running back who played with Marino who then went on to do a single notable thing somewhere else.

And I notice the "writer" conveniently ignores the "stellar" defenses Marino was "blessed" with in the mid-80s. News flash-- when a QB throws for over 400 yards and 6 touchdowns and the team loses, it's not his fault.

Completely skewed "facts"

For example:
"In his 17-year career, Marino played with 55 players named to the Pro Bowl. Marino himself was named a Pro Bowler nine times. That’s a remarkable 64 Pro Bowl players..."

hmmm ... let's see ... Marino played with 55 players named to the Pro Bowl, then when you add Dan to that number you get ... 64???

So, basically he's counting each time someone got named to the game, not the number of individual players.

Must be that new math rearing its ugly head again.

As Mark Twain once famously said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
