The Dolphins had been operating under the belief that they would own four picks on the second day of next April’s NFL Draft, when the second and third rounds are conducted.

But they will need Broncos right tackle Ja’Wuan James to return soon from his knee injury, and then stay healthy, for that not to be at risk.

The Dolphins and others who monitor such things have projected that the team will receive a third-round compensatory pick as a result of losing James in free agency.

But overthecap.com’s Nick Korte, who’s well-informed on the topic of compensatory picks, is now projecting that pick will be a fourth-rounder instead because James is out with a knee injury sustained in the Broncos’ opener.

Korte, in his occasional compensatory pick projections, has lowered the pick from a third to a fourth-rounder.

A shame, 3rd turns into a 4th...James seemed to be having problems last 2 years he was here.

Sucks but whatever. At least we are still stacked and I'm pretty sure they're not done acquiring picks (think they move Drake by the deadline). There will be draft trades as well, especially if we get our QB with our pick and another in demand QB is on the board with the Pitt pick.

Land a generational qb and you will compete for something quicker than you think.

Not sure why this staffs just figuring out you need to blitz lbs to get pressure. Surely they couldn’t have thought they have enough edge talent for it? That’s a bit concerning if they did.

**** James I don't care...

Oh yeah, and **** Elway and Denver Bozos.

The bad thing is that comp pick comes at the end of the round so it's a big difference.....if it's a 4 then it's always like an early 5th round pick.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense. We lost a first-round starting RT to a monster contract. And we didn’t replace that player by signing free agents. That should be the end of the story. The fact that James has missed games due to injury should have no bearing on the comp pick. Just another way for the NFL to make judgment calls that can’t be questioned.

Totally agree. Just some more bulls*** by the NFL.

Would suck if it weren’t for the loot we just got from recent trades. I’d be shocked if we don’t pick up another 2-3 picks the first 3 rounds along with a few picks next year.

Cant agree enough. I'll add ANOTHER point -

Who gets the benefit of the doubt year after year with regards to the compensatory selections? Hmmmmmm.
