Saban got a *HUGE* contract from LSU, and he's got a great thing there. I'd be surprised if he left. But I'd be more than happy to see Wayne drive a dump truck full of cash up to his house and ask him to think it over.
Shanahan is overrated. Look at that post-Elway record. Forget it.
Tony Dungy probably isn't going anywhere, and in any event, don't we already have a head coach with a good regular season record who does squat in the playoffs?
Herm Edwards would be nice, but he also got a big new contract.
If Mike Martz is walking the Dolphin sideline, I will commit hari-kari. I don't know how many coaches I prefer Wannstedt to (not very many, for sure), but Martz is definitely one of them.
Forget any college guy who doesn't have extensive pro experience. As a matter of fact, that rules out anyone but Saban, as far as I can tell.

Four others I'd look at, in a rough order of preference:
1a. Romeo Crennel. Probably the best NFL assistant without a head job. That Patriots defense has good, not great, personnel. But they play great as a team. It doesn't hurt that we'd take him from a division rival. With any luck, he could bring Chuck Weis as his OC. Weis is without a contract after this year, though someone will probably give him the head job he deserves.
1b. Jim Fassel. Yes, that Jim Fassel. This guy was a good coach whose players finally just tuned him out. It happens to everyone, and like Belichick, he seems smart enough to learn from the mistakes he made in his first go-round (remember that Belichick was a disaster in Cleveland before attaining genius status). Fassel had a good run, got a lot from some so-so talent, and is an offensive innovator who can keep his guys fired up. I'd be ecstatic if he was the head man here in 2005.
3. Brad Childress. Philly's OC, for those who don't know. Calls a smart game. Philly has a rep as a passing team, but in fact it's their running game that has been excellent over the last few years. I like that team's DC, Jim Johnson, too, but he's just too old for his first head job. Kind of a shame, too. They should have a wing in the Hall of Fame for those guys, like Johnson, Alex Gibbs and Monte Kiffin.
4. Charlie Weis. I like him a lot, but sometimes I think he needs a head coach to rein him in; he gets a bit too pass-happy at times. Then again, he hasn't had a real RB to work with before now.

Charlie Weiss has already stated he would not accept another job unless its as a head coach.I would like to see him as the HC with the Fins especially if Scott Pioli comes with him in in a complete sweep of the Fin FO.This org.needs a major overhaul from top to bottom IMO.

I would take Fassel of the list, the players ran the club house with the Giants, look whats happening to the Giants now, yes Coughlin is a drill sergent and nuts, but the Giants have been crying since day one about working hard. Fassel has a great offensive mind, but is way to soft, we don't need that.

I would take a look at Maurice Carthon also. Been with Parcells a long time and could be the next up and coming head coach.

I agree. But against the Colts he did have that real RB, one who was ripping off good runs, and he STILL didn't run him just before the 2 minute warning with a lead and 2nd and 5. I'm betting Belichick ripped into him pretty good, hopefully bringing him back in line. I like him as a OC, with a strong HC, as you stated. I'm just not sure he's HC material. Crennel is by far the better candidate IMO. The players want to go to war for this guy. And he brings 20 odd years of experience working with Parcells and Belichick, learning how you win in this league. Not a bad thing.

Not true. Pioli was never even interviewed for the job, let alone offered it. The Dolphins did their executive search during the postseason, and Pioli was not allowed by the Patriots to interview, because the team was in the postseason.

In any event, Rick Spielman is a good GM. The coach, not the GM, is the issue. That said, I wouldn't turn down a Pioli/Weis or Pioli/Crennel package.

Yes, Fassel is a players' coach, but his players responded to him. Every time his job was on the line, they stepped it up. Fassel may have been a little easy on his players at times, but he received total loyalty and effort from them until the bitter end. And like I said, I think Fassel is smart enough to learn from those mistakes that helped make the 2003 NY season fall apart.
