The new NFL rule..

I understand the penalty for helment to helment but any big hit come on... Also if you want to stop helment to helment slap a suspension and they will stop... Forget the Fine give them a suspension.

What I don't like is that Mort said players will be fined or suspended for "devastating hits."

Really?

So if a guy goes over the middle and a LB blows him up, but perfectly legal (think ray lewis v jets on monday night), he will be fined or suspended or both. Since that WAS a devastating hit.

I think Americas sport is now going on a worse direction under Goodell. Getting tired of this crap already. Just like Rodgers winning about those big hits. Yet he stood up just fine after those hits.
i agree, goodell is messing up the game imo. first with all these bull**** rules, then trying to promote the nfl in london which will never happen and is stupid, now trying to make the game two hand touch basically.

i miss paul tagliabue

I disagree...

There is clear scientific proof that concussions can have significant long-term effects. Professional football players are so big and fast nowadays that launching themselves with their helmet is about the equivalent a hitting someone with a sledge hammer. The Comish gets that he needs to protect his product and his product are the players on the field. Not only that, it is the humane thing to do.

In today's global economy if Goodell wasn't trying to take football global he wouldn't be doing his job. There was a time when not many Americans watched football either. Super Bowl I was NOT even a sellout.

ur rite that concussions are very serious and all, but this is football. their is absolutley no way to prevent them. its a hard hitting sport and its bound to happen unfortunately.

i don't think any players intents are to actually knock a player out so hard that they suffer concussions, but sometimes its inevitable going in full speed its hard to stop in your tracks.

what this is doing, its basically not going to allow defenders to play any sort of defense and that's not right to defenders. i mean, even with this new rule, the hits r still going to happen because its just part of the game.

i agree there are some hits that are real dirty and can be prevented, and those should be punishable, but there are some hits, while they may be real hard and cause a concussion unfortunately, they are legit clean hits.

cant the NFL come up with a better helmet which can possibly protect the players better? they gotta be creative, its just not fair to defenders.

I this is a great question/point. I would think with today's technology it would be possible to use a different substance for helmets that would both protect a players head and have some give to them. Personally, I don't know exactly what substance that would be. The helmets may not be as attractive, but if safety is top priority then I would think that would need to be considered.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think some of these guys know what's it's like out there when the bullets are flying. It's nearly impossible to tell a defender that's going full speed to somehow redirect themselves so they don't hit the ballcarrier a certain way. We don't even know what we look like when we tackle someone.. all we do is lower our shoulder, see a whole bunch of random things at the same time, and get back up. A lot of things happen that you had no idea you did.. I remember one time a TE was trying to block me and apparently I got him to the ground and cleated his hand. **** happens..

I have no problems with taking away helmet to helmet hits, but the new rule is to get rid of "devastating hits". WTF constitutes a devastating hit? Great, now we're going to see clueless referees ****ing up more ****. RIP NFL. Soon there will be contact in the WNBA than the NFL...

there is going to come a point (if it hasnt come already) where these rules are going to start taking away from the game.

I am all for player saftey, and there are certain hits that should be illegal but I feel alot of these problems could be corrected by better coaching.

That Dolphins can not win by more than three points.

i dont know how coaching would help correct these plays, its just bound to happen. their are some dirty plays that can be prevented by the players themselves, but lots of the hits just happen bc they are in motion and cant stop themselves. the intent isn't to kill the opposing player, its to make a play, and unfortunately this sport is a violent one and things like this r bound to happen.

better equipment is the only answer.

The hits are really no different then they were 10 years ago but what has changed is the new age helmets.....:ponder:

Calm down folks. Read about the new rule before you jump to any conclusions. The NFL's new rule is intended to eliminate HELMET to HELMET hits or spearing (leading with your helmet), not big hits. All this non-sense about "put flags on QB's" and the NFL is ruining the game is ignorant. NFL football is not a contact sport, basketball and futball are contact sports. NFL football is a collision sport and its very violent. The NFL isn't asking defenders to stop in mid stride or change their aggressive demeanor. They're asking players to play smarter. It's football 101: Keep your head up, always look at what you are tackling/hitting and you'll be just fine. The NFL is trying to eliminate the incredibly dangerous lunging head first tackles which not only puts the ball carrier at risk but also the tackler. This is by no means another "Brady rule".
