The NFL and NHL will be trying something new in 2025. They both want to go to a BEST RECORD PLAYOFF FORMAT regardless of Conference

NFL

First Round
Team 12 will play Team 5 (Sat)
Team 11 will play Team 6 (Sun)
Team 10 will play Team 7 (Sat)
Team 9 will play Team 8 (Sun)

Re-Seeded by Record again

Divisional Round
Team 1 1st lowest seed (HFA)
Team 2 2st lowest seed
Team 3 3rd lowest seed
Team 4 4th lowest seed

Re-Seeded by Record Again (FINAL 4)
Championship

SUPER BOWL (2 Best Teams regardless of Conference or Division will play). Examples of possibilities:

Chiefs vs Chargers
Pats vs Dolphins
Steelers vs Ravens
Cowboys vs Redskins
Packers vs Bears
Colts vs Jags
Jets vs Bills
or regular (depending on record)
Rams vs Browns
Raiders vs 49ers

NHL
Round 1 (Quarters) (re-seeded by
16 -1
15-2
14-3
13-4
12-5
11-6
10-7
9- 8

Round 2 (Semi-Finals) (Re-seeded by record)
8-1
7-2
6-3
5-4

Round 3 (re-seeded by record)
4-1
3-2

Best 2 standing play for the Cup regardless of Conference or Division Example: Caps vs Pens

Wouldn't that effectively make divisions meaningless since conceivably winning the division doesn't mean anything any more?

This was always the issue with the NFL playoff format that I talked about years ago in the college forum. It's why I always hated to hear people clamoring to make college football just like the NFL. The NFL's playoff format has long been even more flawed than whatever format college had for deciding it's champion when you get right down to it.

You had teams with losing records getting into the playoffs in the NFL just because they won a division with all teams in it having losing records. The superbowl was rarely ever between the two best teams because the two best teams were often from the same conference. This new format eliminates a lot of the flaws.

Divisional games were already meaningless if the end result was a team with a losing record winning their division and getting a playoff spot over a team from a different division with a record of 10-6.
