Let me start off by saying, I’m not suggesting who we should draft in this thread.
Every year it happens, and every year I wonder “Why?†The NFL draft comes around and people start pimping out college players as if they’ll get compensated for their efforts. Every year the media makes heroes out players, over glorifying them to a level they’ll never be able to reach. (Guys like Brady Quinn and Matt Ryan come to mind) But the real truth about the NFL draft is this, it’s not about the players, it’s about the teams.
So in comes Miami, fresh off a 1-15 record, we sit with the #1 pick. The bickering over who to take has already begun, and the draft is still two months away. Fear not however, as Miami can simply do no wrong with this pick. (Well, that’s not entirely true. If we draft King Dunlap first overall, then that was wrong)
Last year, most of us were shocked when Ted Ginn Jr. was picked, not because we thought he was a terrible player, but because the thought hadn’t even occurred to us that Ginn could be the pick. I’m going to attempt to dispel that situation from happening this year by saying this, Miami has every right to pick anyone of the top 10 players and here’s why:
Chris Long: Well it has all been said before, but that doesn’t make it any less true, Chris Long has an incredible motor. He’s all heart and desire, and he possesses the ability to rush the passer and stuff the run, something a weak Miami front 7 could use. The arguments of where Chris Long will play in a 3-4, or in the pros in general have already started, but if Miami were to draft him, I’m certain they’d find a spot for him to start.
Jake Long: Standing at 6’7, over 300lbs and managed 37 reps at the combine, Jake Long is one massive man. Of course some have said that Jake can’t play LT in the pros, but the way I see it, if Jake can’t, no one can. For years Jake Long has protected his QBs well, and if Miami were to draft him, we’d be able to move Vernon Carey back to RT. Or, in a perfect world, we sign someone like Flozell to play RT, and Vernon moves to RG.
Darren McFadden: With the injury to Ronnie Brown, this move would make sense. A torn ACL took Ronnie out of the 07 season, and out of what would have most likely been his first pro bowl appearance as well. But wishful thinking aside, Ronnie won’t be ready to carry the load until around midseason on 08, so someone will need to carry the slack. If Miami were to draft McFadden, we’d have a real solid until Ronnie is healthy, and we’d have a real scary backfield with both of them.
Matt Ryan: A lot of people believe Beck simply isn’t the answer. (I’m not one of them…yet) Drafting Matt Ryan would give Miami that media darling franchise QB they didn’t draft a year ago, and he could mean big things for our offense. Initially, Matt Ryan would be both praised and hated, and how long each would last would depend on his play on the field. If Miami drafts Matt Ryan, I’ll support the move, because I believe Ireland/Parcells/Lee will have done their homework on both Beck and Ryan.
Glenn Dorsey: Dorsey is another player who gives it his all. As an LSU fan, I’ve watched a lot of Dorseys play, although if you need proof of how good Dorsey is, I think the national title game said it all. Many believe Dorsey can’t play in the 3-4, I say Dorsey is talented enough to play wherever he wants on the Dline. Maybe he wouldn’t be ideal for a 3-4, but I wouldn’t be upset with him.
Vernon Gholston: The combine is currently going on, but when its over I have a feeling this is the player that most people will be talking about. Gholstons a workout warrior whose size is almost identical to Chris Longs. Gholston seems like a high boom or bust player, but he certainly looks like he’d be the scariest player in the draft coming off the edge. Gholston would also help a LB core that is in dire need of some fresh young talent.
The rest are kind of a stretch at #1, but so was Ginn at #9, so I won’t rule them out
Sedrick Ellis: After san impressive senior bowl, Ellis flew up a lot of draft boards. Like all DTs however, the question is “Can he play the 3-4?†If he can, he’d be a good pick up for Miami. If Miami were to draft Sedrick Ellis, we’d have a solid player on the Dline, much like Dorsey.
Ryan Clady: He’s another gigantic and powerful tackle. I have to admit, the prospect of drafting a tackle is much more interesting than the tackles themselves. The moves Miami could make along the offensive line would be drastic and could easily improve our running game. If Miami were to draft a tackle, especially one as talented and massive as Ryan Clady, we could have a top 10 oline in a very short time.
Kenny Phillips: This is a real stretch, but Phillips is the best Safety prospect in this draft, and with Bell hitting FA, safety s one of the largest holes on the team now. We do have Hill coming back, but like Ronnie, he’s not going to be ready right away. Phillips is a talented player, and although he’s not on the same level as past hurricane safeties, he’d do good things for the Dolphins.
So when you’re arguing over who Miami should draft, remember, We’ve got some good players to choose from. Miami is a team that lacks talent right now, and it’s pretty hard to rule out anyone.
