It's pretty obvious what the theme has been to this point this off-season and that is sign "physical" football players. Jake Grove is a physical and tough guy, Tony McDaniel can be nasty, physical and strong, Cam Wake is a physical linebacker, Eric Green is a CB who likes to play physical and can hit and Gibril Wilson is a physical safety. After watching our playoff game vs. Baltimore it was obvious that we needed to get more physical players. The Ravens had a lot of physical players and they smacked us in the mouth. It's good to see us get some physical guys in the fold. I hope we keep finding those types of players in the draft and some undrafted guys that fit that mold also.

yeah we did get smacked in the mouth by the Ravens...i'm also glad we're getting physical players, because it's high time we started smacking people in the mouth right back...

Taking the long view, not just physical players, but possibly a QB upgrade (sounds sacrilegious, eh?) if we want to reach The Promised Land. Chad will get us into the playoffs but the knock among Jest fans has always been that he can't beat a top 10 defensive team. 2008 would bear that out: 1-3 record (split with NE, who were ranked #10 and swept by the Ravens). I like Pennington and we're lucky to have him, but to think an older, weak-armed leopard's gonna change his spots is kind of naive.

Yeah I remember last season that we had long discussions on just who had a mean streak on our roster.. and now we're getting loaded with them!

I want to get to the point where the other teams in our division hate to see us coming.

If I may respectfully play devil's advocate... the jets teams were never strong enough to overcome a bad day by Pennington. I don't care how many INTs he threw against the Ravens (ok, I do, but hear me out) the reason they were thrown is because we were getting manhandled everywhere it mattered.

I think that if we take as big a step forward at getting better (which may or may not show up in the win column) as we did last year, Pennington doesn't throw multiple INTs in the playoffs because we can take care of business in all phases of the game. And I'd rather have Pennington's brain QBing my team than anyone else this side of Marino.

My prediction is Pennington will be a strong QB for us in 2009, including the playoffs. For 2010 it's up to the FO. We've heard what their plans are, but that's a year and a half away, so we'll see if it plays out that way.

1) Friend Etuoo33 summed it up nicely.
that's where you want to be: "where the other teams in our division hate to see us coming."
I detected some of attitude developing throughout last season.

2) Friend MylesFynch rightfully corrected a thread about to take a bad turn with an astute observation: "My prediction is Pennington will be a strong QB for us in 2009, including the playoffs. For 2010 it's up to the FO. We've heard what their plans are, but that's a year and a half away, so we'll see if it plays out that way."

perspective & patience
We will Contend in 2010:thanks:

I want opposing teams to feel pain when they get hit by us. I want opposing teams to say that our Dolphins were the most physical team they played against. That would be a good thing to hear for a change!!!!

True. When you play the Ravens, you know you're in a war regardless of their record. It's just how they play football. I'm glad the Trifecta seems to be building a similar philosophy here. Back when Howie Long was still playing, after a game where the Raiders beat Miami HL said the key to beating the Dolphins was to beat them up. That made me cringe. We should have been beating up the Raiders not the other way around.

BP constructed the Giants to compete against some really physical teams in the Redskins, Bears, & 49ers in order to get his Giants to the top. That's what he did there, let's hope he can do it again here. The blueprint works if you can get the right pieces and team mentality together at the same time.

The reason back then was because we had a team filled with finesse players. Our o-line was always a finesse pass blocking o-line during that time who couldn't open up a running lane if their life depended on it. A defense would just play smash-mouth against our finesse guys and we'd get clobbered.

everything starts in the trenches:
no matter how unattractive that may be, it is a football reality.
Parcells builds from the trenches out, always.
We are already set on the offensive line & are a NT away from setting the front 3
(need one more parcellian LB to set the back four & he might even be on the team as we speak)

pretty good work for going into the second draft

We show serious promise in all other sectors, but only after he has the trenches straight will he look to the so-called skilled positions.
Parcells & Co. are constucting a franchise that will be dominate in the NFL for years to come.

We will Contend in 2010!

I want to see some of our defensive guys knock the snot out of opposing ball carriers this year. Also I want to see our running game just ram it down an opponents throat. Wouldn't that be fun to watch for once!!!

Shula did not use many high pick on the offensive line. John Sandusky was famous for taking junk from other teams and making them good offensive linemen we just relied on that to much IMO and should have used higher draft picks there too.
