The official Eli Apple is way over hyped and shouldnt be a 1st round pick thread

The physical talent and size are there but what I see is a developmental prospect with a big upside, not my first choice at #13.

He's a very niche player, if you want to play press your options are slim. I'm not even convinced Artie Burns won't end up the brtter player in a few years. But that's cornerbacks for you, it's the hardest position to draft IMO. I'm also not convinced Jsckson can't learn press, and if that's the case than he's clearly the better prospect IMO.

I'm not as high on apple as most people here seem to be, but I understand why people like him. My biggest problem with him is he skipped more workouts at the combine than he did.

At 13 I couldn't hand a letter with his name on it until I saw him do those drills, but that's just me.

Haha love this thread....CB is a scary position...Like war said it's basically a crap shoot....Personally I'm more interested in the FS position because I feel it a bigger need.

Take a look at this team when Delmas played and then didn't play...Its night and day...I know we won't have an elite FS to start but Byard Simmons and WV cat are guys I would be looking at.

I mean I don't think this team gives Isa Abdul Quddus the contract he got unless they view him as the starter opposite of Jones at safety. He played in the box more the past few years, but he has experience playing FS as well . . . He is very versatile. He reminds me A LOT of the guy you mentioned, Lou Delmas. Very underrated signing.

My only concern with Apple is his temprament. Does he have the self confidence to take on the receiving stars of the league at the LOS and force them into doing what they don't want to do? I.watch him and I see a terrific athlete with smooth footwork and good hand usage. But he looks at times.like he's concentrating hard on not screwing up sometimes, when in fact he's doing fine. As the route progresses you see it emerge. Love all th rest but is he a "pup that bites"?

Didn't this video already get it's thread time? Agree that there is more to the CB position, unfortunately that video is still a selective representation. Not the best piece of media to substantiate an opinion on Apple.

VH3 is the only CB worthy of an early first rd pick; I've been saying that for months. Never boarded the Apple hype train with his inexperience and inability to showcase a full array of skills at the position.

We need a CB but really don't see the need to reach for a CB like Apple, not to mention he looks like a walking pass interference. I hope we pick best player available, Apple is far from the best player available at #13 and we have so many other needs to not reach for one position. Who knows maybe Ol' tannebaum will make a splashy trade, I just hope I have nice buzz by then.

I think you'd see a wide disparity play to play, which isn't ideal at his position. He can be in perfect position late in the route but lose track of the ball and have his back turned at the crucial moment. Apple would make me nervous in 2016 field projection but since he's always been a highly touted player, I loved him in 2014, and he tested as a great athlete I certainly wouldn't mind the pick.

He certainly isn't Mike Rumph, that's for sure. Rumph was a stiff rather mediocre cornerback who somehow got pulled into the late first round in 2002 largely due to all the supreme talent around him on the Canes.

In a rather dull draft crop I'd say defensive back and specifically cornerback is one of the best positions, particularly in the later rounds. I was scanning the available players and came across many guys I didn't know were in this draft. The two little Auburn kids, for example, can be pests but I never hear much about them. Both of them -- Countess and Jones -- have had 6 interception seasons, albeit with Countess it was when he was with Michigan. I remember when he almost singlehandedly won a bet for me against Notre Dame several years ago. He was first team All- Big 10 early in his career. Then somehow it turned into obscurity. That's the type of thing I like, major college sleepers, guys who were once rated very highly and then nobody cares. It wasn't all a mirage when Auburn completely shut down Paxton Lynch in the bowl game. Auburn has been near the very top of the recruiting rankings year after year, but they can have some wild swings in performance from year to year, partially due to the offense but also via changing defensive coordinator so often. I would absolutely make sure to carefully check their roster for hidden gems. It simply makes sense.

Those two guys aren't necessarily the ones I would target. It's merely an observation that many talented defensive backs seem to be out there without much attention. I mentioned D.J. White of Georgia Tech a couple of nights ago. He's from the same mold, an aggressive little pest who has plenty of athletic ability and certainly should be looked at as a slot cover guy, if nothing else.

Also, Jeremy Cash of Duke went from overrated 6 months ago to underrated now. I never hear his name. He's a smart aggressive type who takes great attacking angles and wipes out plays in the backfield, with many similarities near the line of scrimmage to Reshad Jones. Cash might not have an ideal position but for a late round pick he would be hellish to cut, probably the type who would become a fan favorite in preseason.
