In an attempt to keep mutant pin (candy)-stripers out of the Red Sox appreciation thread, and vice versa, I would like to propose this seperate thread for "intelligent debate" between the two camps' haters. :D

I shall gladly loft the first volley:

1) The Yankees, through their criminal owner, attempt to buy championships, and always have. Their billion dollar folley since their last title has been a joy to watch. When Yankee fans respond with the obligatory "well the Red Sox are second in salary," please quickly remind them to consider how badly Boston would destroy them if it spent the extra $80 some million difference. Yeah, second to Microsoft would be who?

2) Derek Jeter is among the most overrated players in baseball, and the wrong man is playing SS in the Bronx. http://www.nysun.com/article/32137?page_no=1

3) The Yanks do not have the pitching to win a title, again this year. But you can rest assured they'll buy the best mercenary they can from Milwaukee, Pittsburgh or K.C. come mid-season. Oh, but wait, they have nothing left in the farm system to offer!

4) Johnny Damon will never be "beloved Johnny Damon" in New York.

Game on. :fire:

This thread is like Game 7 between the sox and yanks being played in the skydome... We have to to to each others thread and hate. It's our way...

i cant remember where i just read the article yesterday that was saying the myth of jeter being clutch.

It stated that jeters avgerage, OBP, and Slugging were all lower then his regular season averages and that he has only 1 career game winning hit.

It also was talking about that is jeter was drafted by the pirates what would he be right now? and how he is hte 2nd best SS in the NY infield.

Man i wish i can remember where i read the article

I found this article from the NY Post, thought it was interesting, I'm not sure this is what you're talking about:
"In a Sports Illustrated poll of 470 players, Jeter was named on 9 percent of the ballots as the most over-rated. Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran was second with 7 percent and Alex Rodriguez was third with 6 percent.

" 'I don't care, I guess anything I do now is a plus,' Jeter said with a grin. 'At least I am in good company.' "

Don't get me wrong, I think Jeter is in fact overrated a bit especially with his defense as he doesn't have the range he once did but he is a hell of a ball player and has tons of talent. Future Hall of Famer too no doubt.

About Jeter's clutchness, I don't think he got any game winning hits last year and always seemed to come up with the game on the line in the 9th but never got the job done (even WFAN talked about that to death last year), but I'd still rather have him up at the plate then almost any Yankee on the team now and for the last 10 years or so.

Oh, i'm not saying he's a bad baseball player by any means... He's an excellent player... And among the most dedicated and prepared players of all time.... 12 years ago, i'd have taken him on the Red Sox in a heartbeat... But not over Nomar, or Tejada, or A-Rod back then...

He just gets a disproportionate amount of cred because of things like his defensive play against Oakland in the playoffs, etc.

Oh and I must take issue with this thread. I enjoy polluting the Yank thread every now and again. This takes away my pleasure, even though the yankee thread is no where to be found on the first page.

Let's just wait and see what happens in the playoffs. In baseball I am a Yankee fan, but I find that it's not the playoffs unless the Yankees are playing against the Red Sox, so I am actually almost rooting for the Sox to get in there. It's the best rivalry in baseball. What the hell did we do before they added the wildcard??? I can't even remember. I thought last year was so boring when they both lost. Obviously this thread contains Yankees and Sox fans, but if your team is out of it who would you rather watch play each other?

1) you do realize Boston had a $40+ mil advantage on SL in the '04 WS but that doesnt' count, right? and exactly how many home grown regulars did the Sox have on that team? ONE but the yanks buy Championships, right?

2) That poll is nonsense and anyone who watches baseball w/o a bias would tell you so. If anything the man is underrated b/c he doesn't put up great regs eason #s like ARod but luckily he doesn't do what ARod has done for the Yanks in postseason.

3) Maybe that's true but if Moose & Chacon pitch like they have and Randy and Wang pitch like they are capable we'll have enough pitching to win. We had much worse pitching in '04 and were 1 game(choke) away from winning the AL.

4) He'll never be beloved here like Boston b/c we have actually won in our Granparents lifetime before he got here. He didn't help us end nearly 90 years of futility but he will be appreciated and loved if he helps us win.

The averages don't matter, go abck and watch the postseason games in the dynasty years and he is in the middle of 90% of the rallies and in thsoe years the formula was to keep it close then win late on the strength of the pen.

I'll start w/ '96(I don't have tim to go through all the years but I will later):

1996:
ALDS Game 2: Yanks down 1-0 in series and 4-2 in the 7th. W/ Girardi on 1st in the 7th Jeter singled to Center which helped Yanks w/in 1. Tie game in 12th and Jeter leads off w/ a single then scores GW single. Wouldn't you call that clutch?

Game 3: Yanks down 2-1 in 9th, Jeter leads off w/ a single then scores tying run- is that not clutch?

1996 ALCS Game 1: Hits Game tying HR in 8th inning.

Game 3: Yanks down 2-1 in 8th w/ 2 out, Jeter doubles then scores and Yanks go on to score 3 more times and win 5-2 to take 2-1 series lead- is that not clutch?

1996 World Series Game 3: 8th inning Yanks up 2-1 and down 0-2 in the series and Jeter leads off w/ a hit and he comes around to score giving the yansk insurance runs.

Game 4: Yanks down 2-1 n series, 6-0 in game. Jeter starts things off in 6th w/ a hit. yanks score 3 runs in 6th to cut it to 6-3. W/ 2 out in 10th and Raines on Jeter singles, the Jeter and Raines runs would be runs 7 and 8 in an 8-6 wib to even the series- noth cluthc though, right?

Game 6: Yanks up 1-0, Jeter singles driving in run #2 then steals second and he eventually comes around for run #3 in a 3-2 Yankee win to clinch the WS. Clutch?
