The '73 Fins!

:sidelol:

While the thread is tongue in cheek because a Perfect Season is the clincher,an argument might be made by those who actually saw both teams play.....

Well, I was 12 in 72 but I can tell you this....I've heard a couple of players(can't remember who but maybe Zonck)that said the 73 team was a better team. Most of the players were the same but they had another year together, a healthy Griesse and confidance from 72.

Makes sense. Their schedule was probably harder too.

I think you have to be more specific than just "best" when talking about this. I hold no illusion that the 1972 team is the most talented team in NFL history. I'd give that honor to the 1985 Bears.

At the same time, the 1972 team is unique in that they stepped up to every challenge and came away victorious. You can't take that away from them, and it does mean that they're the best team in my eyes in the same way that the press talks about the Patriots as such a great team these days. They were more than a sum of the parts, and they accomplished something great together.

Thats exactly right.

I heard Shula say the 73 team might have been better. The 72 team was just motivated better and had a schedule advantage.

It was a better team but it did not have a perfect record

The 72 team was a hungrier team because they had been embarassed by Dallas in the Superbowl the year before. Their goal was to get back there and they took each game with that mission in mind.

The 73 team, tough a better team, could keep that kind of focus for the entire season.

IMO the 73 team was a better team. The defense gave up only 150 pts in 14 regular season games, and they had a 1st quarter beating of their opponents by a remarkable 106-19. Bob Griese was healthy all year an unlike the 72 team, they cruised thru the playoffs, out scoring the 3 opponents by an average of just over 17 pts. Super Bowl VIII was a laugh, the Dolphins lead Minnesota by 17 pts at the half on their way to a 24-7 victory. Maybe they lost two games (Oakland 12-7 and Baltimore 16-3) but they won every game they had to, and then some. I've been a Dolphin fan for 38 yrs now, and I still think the 73 team was the best ever.

Well, is always hard to say who the best team ever was but if I had to pick one other than our 72-73 team it'd NOT be the 85 bears...They had a great defence andPeyton but the Steelers of the mid-70's were really loaded. With the bears you have Peyton in the HOF...with PITT you have Bradshaw,Franco,Webster,Swann,Stalworth,Green,L.C.Greenwood,Mel Blount,Jack Ham and Jack Lambert...is not even close. The bears had a great defence but PITT had it all.

 Totally agree. That CHI D had the athletes & HOFer Singletary, but it was really the 46 scheme IMO that made them dominant. PIT was stacked.

But what's really funny and what gets lost in all of this is the fact that our Phins weren't 1 and done as far as the '72 season & the question of their greatness is concerned.

Not to review Dolphins History but supporters of the weak argument about the "weak schedule" fail to understand MIA was a true expansion fran who went to the SB shortly after its inception. That Perfect '72 team was the defending AFC Champs, won it all

again in '73 and finally had it's DYNASTY run stopped due to the uncertainty the WFL cloud caused. IMO if there was no WFL or if the late J.Robbie would've paid our stars, PIT would have less than 4 rings today.
