No, you don't need a franchise QB to win in this league . . . but it damn sure makes it alot easier. What you have to understand is, we have exhausted every route of "not" going after a franchise QB that it feels like we are going around in circles. Many people just want to roll the dice on a first round guy and develop him as our own, rather than pick up a guy heading into his 8th year. The fact that he should have been in the Super Bowl last year (Giants lucked out with the 49ers returner messing up 2 times) and him and San Fran still can't get a deal done says alot about the situation. There is no urgency on their part and if I had a chance at upgrading to Peyton Manning over Alex Smith, I would take my time as well. Hell they drafted Kaepernick last year in the 2nd round and you know Harbaugh is gonna get Josh Johnson if Smith leaves . . . so San Fran is in solid shape to swing the fences for Peyton.
What makes Flynn so intriguing is . . even though this will be his 5th year, he was developed by our current head coach and that really gives me a comfort level of bringing him in. Had Sparano still been here, I gotta tell you I would be against it, but if our head coach is comfortable risking his job on him and the fact that he knows him and helped him come of age in Green Bay, I have to be comfortable with it . . . which I am.
People who are saying Matt Moore is better than Smith and Flynn . . . I mean that isn't even the point . . . the point is you CAN'T go into the season with Matt Moore unchallenged. You have to exhaust all options within reason to make some competition at that position. All of the 6 million dollar RT's and 10 million dollar WR's aren't going to change that.
Personally, I am fine with the way they are going about this QB search, we have to let the business aspect of it play out now.
