Tim graham of espn wrote an article when the wildcat came out that a DB or any defensive player can hit pennington as hard as they want in the first 5 yards. (which is legal)

what if the patriots, being the dirty scumbags they are, put a backup DLman to just run and sack Pennington every time they do wildcat, if he just wrecks him 2-3 times, sparano won't watch that and will stop calling that play for pennington's health...
it's a good defensive plan, and if pennington can just run out of bounds, they can't hit him... so we have to be careful with that, i hope there is a wildcat wrinkle where pennington can do something to evade that hit, cuz it could be devastating...
i really think belichek will coach a great game, but i got a feeling he will take it to another limit to try and embarass us, like we did to them...

i still think the phins win a close one, 28-20.. but we might walk away with some injuries, cuz this is essentially a playoff game

They can't "run and sack Pennington every time they do the wildcat". They can only (legally) tackle (sack) players that have the ball.

Your thread was talking about "legal" plays (legally hitting inside five yards), so, no, that won't work.

Exaclty. If pennington just stands at the WR position and does not run a route, they cant hit him.

It's also helpful that one of the 2 dirtiest *******s, Rodney Harrison, ((voted by his peers, I believe, dirtiest player in the league) already received his just desserts and is out at least for the year. I'm more worried about Carey tackling and gouging CP if the pocket breaks down.

You can't tackle the guy inside 5 yards...you can only bump him to try and slow his release off the line. If you could tackle the guy, corners would just try and tackle the receiver every play

Alright thats true guys, but what if they put a DE on him and just hit him around alot without tackling him...

would they still call those plays if chad is getting beaten up more than before...
i dont think you send your qb out to get injured, especially as a historically injury prone, Pennington.

I dont want it to happen by anymeans, but it could be a serious way to shutdown the wildcat as we have it... we'd just have to go wildcat with no QB, and let them know we're running it, but how?
maybe that is a different wrinkle, i'd hate to take pennington off any snaps tho, he's the huddle leader

Chad can just go right to the sideline when the ball is snapped. Unless he runs a route, he should be OK from getting hit.

If this was legal, you would have seen it done already. Anything like you're describing is a 15 yard personal foul I believe, at the very least an unnecessary roughness call. It would also be grounds for an eviction from the game, as well as a fine and possible suspension from the commissioner. He is cracking down on dirty play like this. I have absolutely zero fear of this happening....

Chad isn't exactly a small guy. He could take on any DB that they have and it would put them at a disadvantage to send a linebacker or d-lineman over to knock him around during the play.

i got it!! put beck in for the wildcat!!

im shocked it hasn't happened yet actually, someone teeing off on him.

There would be NOTHING dirty about the Patriots players hitting Pennington in the wildcat. It's the smart thing to do. If you put your quarterback out there at receiver, he's fair game.

yep. I can't believe a team hasn't put a linebacker out there on him. Its CHAD PENNINGTON. You don't need to put a CB on him.
