Their are many teams that have recently turned their teams around through the draft. These teams do not trade for big named problematic players, trade up in drafts, or sign huge free agents to large overpaid contracts. The Patriots are a perfect example but they are always following this formula and thats how come they are so succesful. They make great draft selections, compile extra draft choices, and even let big named players go when they ask for too much money. I hope our front office starts mirroring that of the patriots. Here, however, are some teams that were at the bottom of the league and through a couple successful drafts they have playmakers on both sides of the ball.

49ers: The San Fransisco 49ers have turned an offense with kevan barlow and jeff garcia into one consisting of Alex Smith, Frank Gore, David Baas, and Vernon Davis. They look to add a #1 wr to that great arsenal of weapons in the next upcoming draft. On defense they selected manny lawson who is a great de/olb. They have already done an excellent job adding TALENT through the draft to their offense and are starting to on defense. The 49ers have turned their team around through 2 drafts.

Titans: One player has turned this offense into a completely new attack. Vince Young. He stepped in and has singlehandely turned their O around. With other draft picks Ben Troupe at te and Courtney Roby at wr and LenDale white waiting to take over at rb, they have a pretty solid offense that looks to solidify itself further this upcoming season. Pacman Jones has added a new dimension to their return game as well as being a very good cornerback (4 ints this year).

Jets: As much as i hate to say it, the Jets did a 360 last season and made the playoffs. How did they do it? Well, it started with the selection of Dbrickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold to replace some old vets that they let go because they wanted to much money. They also selected a future starting qb in kellen clemens and an allpurpose player in brad smith. Leon washington also came in and killed the dolphins with his short catches and quick moves. The year before the took Mike Nugent is a solid kicker and their starting FS rhodes. The jets "hit" on 3-5 players in this past draft picking up 3 starters immediately and probably 5 very soon. This is what one or two drafts can do for your team.

Cardinals: Do you remember how horrible the Cardinals were a 3 seasons ago? They were consistently the worst team in the league. Well, now they have a very young offense that will be great for the next 6 years. They did however, go out and sign edjerin james to a large contract. But, they also drafted Matt Leinart, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Antrelle Rolle, Karlos Dansby, Taitusi Lutui (Guard), Leonard Pope, and Gabriel Watson. They also drafted adrian wilson in 2001.

The Pats: You knew this was coming....They have so many starters that they drafted its rediculous. First look at all the stars they have let leave or they traded. They traded deion branch for a 1st rounder b/c he was giving them problems. They let ty law go because he wanted too much money. Same goes for willie mcginest who was there through all their super bowls. How many starters on the pats over the years do you think was home grown talent that they drafted themselves? how many do you think? Well if you look at their team now, Tom Brady, Laurence Maroney, kevin faulk, Troy Brown, daniel graham, Chad jackson, matt light, patrick pass, ben watson, Tedy Brusci, randall gay, asante samuel, richard seymour, ty warren, vince wilfork, eugene wilson, and stephen gostkowski! and those are just some starters and players that get some playing time. So many more players have left the patriots that they drafted.

This is what good drafts lead to!!!! You compile as many draft picks as you can, develop players that you drafted, and once you have a decent young team you start drafting BPA so then you have great replacements for when your players get hurt, want more money, or retire.

How many players on the dolphins starting roster now have we drafted???
ronnie brown and vernon carey are the only decent draft choices on O over the last 5 years (this is assuming you think chris chambers 2nd round and randy mcmicheal are overpaid and should be gone based on the pats formula). Defensively, 10 years ago we had GREAT selections in zach thomas and jason taylor. Since then? madison and surtain. we made a decent move trading surtain because he was going to command too much money it's just what we did with that draft pick that sucks. Channing crowder is going to turn out to be a solid pick and depending on what jason allen does the rest of our crappy secondary were either free agency pickups (goodman, will allen, tillman) or yeremiah bell.

How many draft picks have we traded over the years?? We trade for AJ feeley, Culpepper, Harrington, Lamar Gordon, marty booker, ricky williams. How many first day picks is that? 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and 2 3rds i believe and then harringtons 5th..How many old veteran free agents have we signed that have played solid but are gonna hurt us because they are going to retire or are on the downside of their careers, or are gonna require more money? Well, kevin carter, vonnie holliday, tractor traylor were all signed when they were on the wrong side of 30. They played great dont get me wrong and were good additions to this team...but when you have those guys starting w. JT another 30+ year old and for 2-4 years you only draft matt roth on the first day of the draft what do you expect to happen???? they say we have an old defense because of that. We should have been influxing new talent with all the draft picks we lost. Instead we're left with a sick defense that is pretty old with a couple young guys in crowder, roth, and bell.

Now, I know wannstedt killed us giving up all those picks...but its starting to look at saban did too. Giving up a 2nd and 5th rounder and we'll see how jason allen and derek hagan pan out... I just hope our new regime understands that the way you build your team IS THROUGH THE DANMM DRAFT!!! Trade Mcmichael for a 3rd rounder and select a young stud who cares for the game and doesnt have off the field issues. We should be that team trading our backup quarterback for a 3rd rounder not the team giving up the pics. Do you even remember the last time the dolphins had two picks in the first or 2nd round???The Jets and pats seem to do it pretty damn often. We can turn it around its easy, we just gotta have a solid draft! If you pick up a realistic 3 starters in our first 4 rounds this year, and then next year add another 2-3 starters you have 6 new guys, possibly 3 on each side of the ball that are very young and hopefully very talented. And you keep making solid drafts, drafting BPA and adding talent behind your aging guys so when they reach their low to mid 30s you can afford to let them go, because there has been a 2nd round pick waiting behind him for 3 seasons.

...I just hope our new regime understands that the way you build your team IS THROUGH THE DANMM DRAFT!!!...

The Dolphins are a win now organization. Will Wayne really be happy with a team thats rebuilding for 2-3 years down the road? I doubt it. I agree that they are doing the wrong thing but seriously, this is less a new regime and more like a slight modification to the current one.

great post. Btw, I would only be down to trade our 9th and 3rd (preferably a player isntead of a pick) for a QB other hten that, NO MORE TRADING UNLESS IT INVOLVES GETTING PICKS

problem here is, we odnt have the QB tahts why we see the draft picks affecting us SO MUCH. Jets...Pennington, Pats...Brady, Miami...hence Miami, you know the rest regarding that area. Thats been our problem, dont have our Field General. Whats the point of drafting players non stop if ur MAIN guy that touches the ball almost 99.9999999% of hte time unless its a HB direct snap is nothing but average/below.

thanks guys i appreciate it...i'm just voicing the opinion of most of us on here. its painful watching these other teams get good real fast and stay on top for awhile while we are always this mediocre to below average team since marino retired.

Good post w/some excellent points.

One thing that you eluded to was that was all those teams drafted and tutored a quality caliber QB. A majority of the time you'll notice a major turn around in a teams performance along w/their W/L record is attributed with the QB play. (example- Saints w/DB, Cin w/CP, Pitt w/BR, etc.)

Whether Daunte is the future or Miami drafts a young QB that can be tutored w/Miamis offensive philosophy......one the play of that picks up the team will immediately start showing positive results.

What else do they all have in common? A good young QB. That's how it starts. The Bengals became winners AFTER they settled their longstanding QB problem by drafting Carson Palmer.

You have somewhat of a valid point. But, you need to dig a LITTLE deeper. You are pointing to the QB as the answer. And you've supported it with young teams who've drafted young QBs.

BUT, let me point out one fact... the REAL fact. Of the teams you've listed, how many were playoff contenders or paticipants last year? All EXCEPT 1: The Arizona Cardinals.

NOW, can you tell me what they do NOT have that all other's in the list DO have? An offensive line.

I play a LOT of fantasy football. And, while that doesn't make me a guru, it does make for watching a LOT of football. And, there's something I've noticed about QB success, you need a great combination of C and LT. For RBs, you've got to have 1 of the following 3 to be successfull: a dominant LG and LT, a dominant RG and RT or a dominant LG, C and RG. I didn't say Pro Bowlers, I said dominant.

Let me point out a glaring fact to illustrate this (Edgerrin James):

10/16 vs. Chicago, 36 rushes 55 yards. And they lost.

Fast forward 1 month later:

(December) 111 rushes 464 yards (4.2 ypc), and they won 3 of 5.... all 3 were playoff contending teams. And, btw, they finished with 5 wins. Those 3 wins came as the OLine was starting to gell.

What's this mean: when you're OLine plays well, you're skill players become better.

Guys, if this team and fan base do not start embracing the importance of the OLine.... we're not going anywhere. I don't care how many QBs we draft.... get a D@#! line!

Agreed, the draft is still the best way to build. I do have to point out the Cardinals haven't exactly turned it around (aren't they drafting 5th?) and that if the Jets have turned it around 360 degrees, that would mean they are heading in the same direction they were heading in before turning. :))

The Broncos and Packers built teams in the late 90s with significant free agent rosters but those are exceptions. Look at the Colts and Bears this year...a couple free agents on those teams but mostly guys they have drafted.
