The reason McCoy thinks he didnt get the job.

I think this is a non-issue. The Dolphins don't even know if Todd Bowles is interested in staying in Miami, and in fact the article admits that Bowles was never told anything other than that Philbin got the job.

Mike McCoy has to be embarrassed about this whole thing. He went around telling everyone that he was getting the job. He even told the Raiders they can take their interview and shove it because he's pretty sure he's getting the Miami gig. Now he doesn't get it, and he has to come up with some reason why he didn't get it that makes Miami look bad and him look like the victim. It's only NATURAL to do that. So he cycles through in his mind trying to figure out where it all went wrong and he remembers the conversation about Bowles where they made it clear that they'd like him to consider Todd for the defensive coordinator position, they think highly of him, etc. THAT becomes the excuse. THAT becomes where it all went wrong.

But let's be honest. Jeff Ireland is the same guy that asked a prospect if his mom was a prostitute to see how he'd react. He's the guy that had Brian Daboll come barreling into the interview room playing Theatre of Life pretending to be a diva receiver pestering the quarterback to see how he'd handle it. It could very well be that conversation about Bowles was nothing more than push back to see how strong Mike McCoy's convictions are. If you tell them you're pretty sure you want a defensive coordinator with experience and then they make it clear they want Bowles, and you cave in easily, then obviously you're not very strong on your convictions of vision for what you want with the team.

I'm telling you, this was a NON-ISSUE in my opinion, because Bowles seems likely to leave anyway and has indeed told the Dolphins he'd like to explore his other options.

I think a bigger issue is how McCoy handled himself during the process. He interviews with the Dolphins and the interviews went well. So what does he do? He goes around telling everyone he's getting the job and even cancels the Oakland interview.

Think about it. You're an owner. You kind of want Joe Philbin. Your GM wants Mike McCoy. There's still active debate about this. You get wind that Mike McCoy is out there telling media people that he's the favorite for the job, a virtual lock for it as a matter of fact, to the point he actually cancels his Oakland interview and tells them it's because he's pretty sure he's getting the Miami job.

Doesn't that turn you off? It would turn me off. That's a level of ****iness and poor planning, poor professionalism, that doesn't bode well for you as an NFL head coach. Joe Philbin made it clear that he's ready to go for the Miami job if he's called for it, but he did go ahead and schedule that Tampa interview anyway. He went on business as usual while Jo-Jo the Circus Idiot is out doing cartwheels, selling his house and buying boat shoes. Considering how the Dolphins went immediately on to business as usual after finishing their Jeff Fisher interview, commencing with all their planned interviews while the Fisher saga stretched on...which approach do you think resonated with them more?

I'd bet on that being a bigger factor than the Todd Bowles thing.

Another thing: there are most often 3 sides to every story: yours, mine and the reality in between. McCoy is a guy now having to deal with a very public rejection, is looking foolish bragging about how he's the inside candidate for the job and imprudent turning down an opportunity to interview with the Raiders. Who's to say that he's not either embellishing or making a mountain out of a molehill as a face-saving compensating rationalization in order to make himself look like he turned the job down in the eyes of subsequent suitors?

Yay!
I think McCoy's course of action after Philbin's hire would be to 'spin' as to remain a credible coaching candidate after his uber confident boast he was Miami's man and turning down a second interview with the Raiders.

Not even really defending the guy but he is really no different from any of the other talking heads. Also at least he trys to save face fast with an update while many just try to wait till we forget it was said

That's fine. I'm just responding to those who don't think it's fair that he gets called out for it. And for the record: I think most of the South Florida writers aren't very good at their job, so it's nothing against Armando specifically. I think Darlington was probably the best, and that's why he now works for the NFL.

If this whole thing is true then this will not be a successful outcome for Philbin during his regime. A GM who forces asst. coaches on the head coach is a ridiculous concept.

Now you are blaming Ireland again for something we do not even know is true.

Hopefully Bowles goes somewhere else. I wouldn't want the guy that was already here, that i now beat out for the job still around. Second, Bowles isn't even that good at the job he had. I don't see the hype about a guys who's secondary is exposed by good teams. I am happy Philbin got the job and wish him well. Let the man work with who he wants, its his job on the line. May good things come to the Miami Dolphins and their fans !!!

CK summed up nicely.

Professionalism being the operative word and the difference between Philbin and McCoy. McCoy was either badly advised by his agent or simply had brain-fade during the process this last week.

This is the first time I've heard someone say they have the job before official confirmation, let alone verbal confirmation.

The owner can do whatever the hell he wants....it is like the kid who owns the football and decides to take the ball with him if he doesn't like the way things are going. Like it or not, Ross is the owner and calls the shots. I just hope we piece things together. More importantly than having a good coaching staff, we need a franchise QB and the players who can compete for a SB. Talent wins out ....regardless of who is running things.

Not defending the FO, but I will defend Ross as he has used his "power" recently with some pretty decent choices.

1: He wanted Harbaugh.
2: Nixed the Orton trade.
3: (Personal opinion): Opted for Philbin over McCoy

We don't know if during the interview it was *Ireland* who wanted the DC guarantee or Ross, and because of that, I will currently defend Ross as his recent choices, in my opinion, have benefited the organization.

You know this FO is not respected around the league, right? Come on...Ross has a long way to go before he learns the ropes of being an owner.

Buddy Ryan and mike Ditka

Thank you for making my point...you have to go back to the Reagan admin and the existence of the U.S.S.R. to find an example. Highly irregular.

We better hope Bowles does not come back because this IS a major story if he does.

I
f this is true then Id have to agree that this front office is doomed. You cant Hire a HC just because he is willing to hire the DC you like most.

THE HC position is the most important in terms of coaching. You dont hold a first time head coach hostage and force his DC and OC on him. Esp in todays day and age when the HC is not only not guaranteed a few seasons but often is fired mid season based on success, or lack there of, of the team.

You have to allow a head coach to hire who HE believes is the man for the job.

I am admittedly a McCoy guy. However I am not the type of fan that wont give Philbin the benefit of the Doubt. I just truly think that McCoy was the man for the Job. Hopefully im proved wrong this year! :dolphins:

Why shouldn't they be insistent and trying to keep someone they want on their staff? Do you want an adult or a child as a the HC?

Look, the main thing that I think Ross took out of Fisher, was not to let candidates run him around like he was a dog. Good for Ireland and Ross. It's a GM's league, and these HC's better catchup to reality.

The whole thing reeks of sour grapes to me. As CK said, he thought he was going to get the job, told everyone he was getting the job, canceled his other interview, and then he didn't get it. Now suddenly this story leaks to the press? Come on. I really doubt that after how tight lipped the Dolphins have been about this whole thing that they would have leaked this, so my money is on McCoy and damage control.

Well I agree with McCoys reasons if that is true and it sounds reasonable. I think maybe he should have sucked it up if he wanted a head coaching gig because I expect Denver's offense to fall much like wildcat did and thus all his interest will quite diminish. Im not sure if philben agreed to take Bowles either . Its apparent that Bowles was never a serious canidate for the head coach job though.

How is it reasonable for a candidate that has no HC experience to be so arrogant as to say to the owner and GM I want to name my own HC? I mean really. We're not talking about someone that has an establishes track record building a quality staff. The honest truth is, all of these guys are a gamble and I fully support Ross/Ireland for applying some sort of control, until the HC proves they are capable. Before then, with all the stuff that has happened with this franchise and their choices for HC's, I would think Ross is either stupid or totally dettached from his teams realities if he didn't do so.

It's NOT your money or mine, I think it's weak and childish to imply the things some of you are implying. Shoot man, if you don't like it stop keeping up with the team. It ain't that complicated. There are 31 other teams you can follow and ***** about.
