I'm not looking at that dec. 9 date as much more than the kind of spin a player in Jay's position needs to float out there in a situation like this.
He made a mistake saying he hoped to come back for Nov. 24. That optimism -- and Ray's continued weak play -- produced a surge of expectations that were probably unrealistic. Once he'd said that, fans would demand a Nov. 24 start or consider him a ***** even if he truly wasn't able to grip a ball.
If he points to Dec. 9 everybody hoping for his speedier return has those great expectations scaled down, -- then he tries his damnedest to make it back sooner.
It's really just a function of his physical recovery, but I'm guessing:
-- He'll be a longshot option on the 24th, coming in ONLY if Ray is stinkin up the joint but the D has kept us within 7 or 10 late in the 3rd quarter. (Yep, -- I think Ray will still be playing then. But don't yell at me about it.)
-- Jay comes back the following week even if they have to pound nails through that thumb to hold it on.
