Jay Ajayi humiliated two Buffalo Bills on this 53-yard run in the fourth quarter of his 214-yard performance and Dolphins win.
Jay Ajayi makes 8-12 yard runs exciting (and longer ones, too). Because you never know when they are actually over. It’s the first quarter and it’s 2nd-and-20. But Gase doesn’t care. He’s running Ajayi. Tight end MarQueis Gray (a mauling blocker in this game) is a factor. When Ajayi takes the ball from Ryan Tannehill in shotgun, Gray has already buried Bills defensive lineman Kyle Williams. Ajayi cuts right, and a hole has been formed (this will happen again and again and again) by James, Pouncey and Tunsil and Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills, extremely willing wide receiver blockers. Gain of 12. It’s the second quarter and Ajayi is running behind Pouncey, Bushrod and James (who is coming on). Ajayi is held up but flat-out breaks the tackle of linebacker Preston Brown, then Williams, then finishes with a questionably-necessary stiff-arm as he heads out of bounds, as if to prove a point. Gain of 11. Ajayi has more speed and elusiveness than anyone outside of perhaps Frisco, Texas and Boise, Idaho, knew. Now it’s the third quarter, and again, Ajayi’s going after every inch. He’s running right and Pouncey and Bushrod are handling their men. Gray again seals off a defender. And Ajayi runs right inside Gray. Gain of nine. It’s only two games, but this is more than a fluke. This offensive line and this running back should post regular 8-12 yard gains moving forward. As a bonus, to the upper left you can see what Ajayi did to two Bills who tried to tackle him at the begining of a 53-yard, fourth-quarter run.
- Tannehill showed improved pocket awareness and willingness to run. In the second quarter, Tannehill stepped up into the pocket, threw an accurate, off-balance pass to Landry for 14 yards. Same series and it’s 3rd-and-2 at the Buffalo 15. Tannehill scrambles right and appears apprehensive but clearly hears offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen in his head shouting, “This is the play where you use your athleticism, Ryan! This is when a winning NFL quarterback scrambles for a third down the puts a dagger in the defense’s back!” Tannehill gains four and keeps the drive alive. Then, in the fourth quarter, a critical play that should not be forgotten. It’s 3rd-and-7 and Miami trails 17-14 with 5:57 left. Tannehill rolls right and senses the pressure behind him from rookie Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson. With four Bills chasing him, Tannehill, off balance again, throws a frozen rope, 24 yards in the air, to a crossing Jarvis Landry. A clutch throw. Under pressure. In a clutch situation. Everything Miami hopes and dreams Tannehill can be at his absolute best.
- Suh made a huge defensive play — from left defensive end. Credit to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for some creativity. Miami is trailing 17-14 and Buffalo has a 3rd-and-3 at Miami’s 33. It’s the fourth quarter. Suh lines up at left defensive end with Cameron Wake at left defensive tackle. Kiko Alonso shows middle blitz, but he’s about to drop back. Cornerback Bobby McCain is about to blitz. Buffalo is at a disadvantage. Wake drops into coverage. Suh shoves the right tackle away, and swims past a guard with a power move before burying Tyrod Taylor. A well-designed play. Excellent excecution by the burly, surly, behemoth Suh.
