If we are finishing the season with a record that secures us a top selection in the draft it doesn't particularly matter how well or poorly Ryan Tannehill played for the rest of the season. The results would speak for itself. Either he totally bottomed out, thus making it imperative to find a replacement or the rest of the team dissolved and it will be years until we become legitimate contenders. When your in that situation you don't pass on a potential franchise quarterback.
Heres our competition for finding said quarterback:
Cleveland
Surprising absolutely no one Cleveland is appalling. No matter how highly they think of Cody Kessler they cannot afford to (yet again) pass on a potential franchise quarterback. Working in our favor is the fact they have multiple first round picks from their trade with the Eagles. From my understanding there is friction between the front office and coaching staff. Despite that, Hue Jackson is likely to keep his job.
Their remaining schedule is:
San Francisco
Possibly a worse quarterback situation than Cleveland. Chip Kelly is likely to keep his job, though the same can't be said about Trent Baalke. Kelly was fairly aggressive when trying to fix his quarterback woes. Despite inheriting Michael Vick and Nick Foles, he drafted Matt Barkley and traded for Sam Bradford.
Schedule:
Chicago
It was leaked today that the coaching staff has totally lost faith in Jay Cutler and considers Brian Hoyer the superior option (due to his ball security). They won't fall into the trap other franchises have and believe hes the long term answer. Ryan Pace is safe and its unlikely, though not impossible, John Fox is sent packing.
Schedule:
New York
Christian Hackenberg's selection in the 2nd round shouldn't prevent them from drafting a potential franchise quarterback. Little chance Todd Bowles or Mike Maccagnan are fired.
Schedule:
New Orleans
Drew Brees will turn 38 in January. Its easy to imagine the Saints trading him to a contender or having him mentor a young player. Either way they will be planning for the future. Sean Payton signed a long term deal and theres no chance he or Mickey Loomis will be fired, especially considering the lawsuits Tom Benson is dealing with at the moment.
Schedule:
Arizona
Carson Palmer turns 37 during the season and the Cardinals have seen what awaits them once he retires. It wasn't exactly encouraging. No chance Arians or Keim are fired.
Schedule:
Washington
Kirk Cousins is showing hes nothing more than a stopgap and he'll be a free agent this offseason anyways. Dan Synder's volatility is well known, so one can never be too sure, but Scot McCloughan's job is likely safe and Gruden will probably be given another year.
Schedule:
Buffalo
Tyrod Taylor has been exposed and cost his offensive coordinator his job. And just for good measure, Rex Ryan was given told in no uncertain terms that if he doesn't make the playoffs he will be fired. They likely won't make the playoffs. Tyrod's contract allows the team to walk away provided they cut him by the 3rd day of the 2017 league year.
Schedule:
Houston
Brock Osweiler is showing the Texans why the Broncos played hardball during their negotiations. While Bob McNair is extraordinarily loyal to his hires, Rick Smith has been GM since 2006 and repeatedly dropped the ball with the quarterback position. Given McNair's loyalty, and the fact he had to pay Penn State a massive buyout, Bill O'Brien will likely keep his job. Osweiler's deal is apparently fully guaranteed next year, for what its worth.
Schedule:
San Diego
Philip Rivers turns 35 this December and that roster isn't even remotely close to competing for a Superbowl. Mike McCoy could be fired in the next 3 minutes. Given both those factors, its plausible the Chargers will begin a youth movement no matter what they decide to do with Tom Telesco.
Schedule:
Kansas City
Although hes only 32, Smith has shown how limited he is as a player. Andy Reid, who is in no danger of being fired, was aggressive in trying to replace Donovan McNabb when he hit his 30's. Smith's contract allows them to cut him in either of the next 2 offseason with manageable cap hit.
Schedule:
Available quarterbacks:
Sam Bradford: Assuming the Vikings don't keep him, he's playing so well that its a guarantee some team will talk themselves into giving him a chance. Plus, the Vikings will want to recoup some of what they spent for him. He turns 29 this season.
Teddy Bridgewater: Assuming the Vikings do keep Bradford, teams will kick the tires on Bridgewater and the Vikings will be receptive to it in order to avoid quarterback drama and recoup draft picks. He turns 24 during the season.
Jimmy Garoppolo: Whiny little piss ant that is he, Brady hasn't even hidden the fact that he plans to hold that team hostage for years to come. Given Belicheats fondness for flipping players, the notorious hardass might be willing to appease his drama queen of a quarterback. Former Patriot exec Michael Lombardi is predicting they will sit back and wait for some desperate team to blow them away with an offer. Working in favor of that is his utterly affordable contract. He turns 25 this year.
Tony Romo: Basically because...
Jay Cutler: This ****ing tool will always get yet another chance based on his talent alone. He'll never play up to that talent but someone will give him a roster spot regardless. Unless he quits. Which would be a Jay Cutler thing to do.
Kirk Cousins: See previous section.
Brock Osweiler: See previous section.
Philip Rivers: See previous section.
Drew Brees: See previous section.
Alex Smith: See previous section.
Random Notes:
- As badly as hes being eviscerated on this board, Tannehill is still talented enough that other teams will be interested in him. Especially when compared to the alternatives listed above, many of whom are too old, too unproven, or too limited.
- Jay Cutler was traded to the Bears for two 1st round picks, a 3rd round pick, and Kyle Orton. Sam Bradford was traded to the Eagles for a 2nd round pick, a 4th round pick, and Nick Foles. Bradford was traded to the Vikings for a 1st and 4th round pick. Given those precedents, its not impossible Tannehill could fetch a 2nd round pick for us.
- The Titans are a problem. Not only are they struggling to win but they have the Rams first round pick. They are well positioned to make another trade with a quarterback needy team. And we currently lack the draft picks to be the team they deal with. The Jaguars could also cause trouble.
