The first stat that shows the difference from the playoff team of last year, and this years teams is the turn over difference. +17 last year and -7 this year. If we were any where close to as good as we were last year we could easily be 10-4 or 9-5 right now.

The other stat I find very interesting is our leading tacklers. 4 of our top 6 our defensive backs. Both safeties lead our team with Bell in the lead with 103 tackles followed by Wilson with 89. 3rd and 4th are our ILB, but 5th and 6th are our 2nd and 3rd CB with Davis 5th on the team and Jones 6th. Just by looking at this it is pretty obvious our secondary is not causing turn overs, giving up too many big plays. Our secondary that is not on the IR has only picked off 8 passes, and Davis has 4. Wilson, Bell, and Smith, only have one int combined. 3/4 of our starting secondary have 1 pick with two games left in the season. That is awful! I think it is time to sit Wilson and give Clemons more of a chance. He can not be any worse.

Turnovers have absolutely killed us this year. Amazing how we tied for 1st in fewest turnovers last year and we are so bad this year.

We use our safeties as linebackers which ticks me off. You never see one of our safeties on top of a receiver.

First year starting Qb with no real supporting cast, turnovers will happen..

It isn't like we have had an extra ordinary amount of turnovers, but we do not cause any. We have the same amount of INTs as Indy, NE, and just one less than New Orleans. They just cause more turn overs than we do, and give up less big plays.

The thing about how we are turning over the ball recently, is that we turn it over in key areas.Nearly all our turnovers in the past two games have come when we are near or in the opponents red-zone.

I tend to come down hard on the plays that Davis gives up but thank God for him and his 4 interceptions.

As for turnovers Smith has done nothing for us with 0 interceptions and 0 forced fumbles

Wilson and Bell have produced between them 1 turnover on 1680
plays between them...anyone think safety should be a priority??

Crowder and Akin are not much better with 2 turnovers in 1289 defensive plays between them

So here we have 6 players
Davis...633 defensive plays...4 turnovers
Smith...782 defensive snaps..0 turnovers
Wilson..847 defensive snaps..0 turnovers
Bell......833 defensive snaps..1 turnover
Crowder715 defensive snaps..1 turnover
Akin.....574 defensive snaps...1 turnover
SO WHAT WE HAVE IS 4384 SNAPS BETWEEN THEM WITH
7 TURNOVERS...INCREDIBLE

Darren Sharper has 8 turnovers or 1 more than the 6 players mentioned above and could have been ours but we decided to
sign Gibral Wilson instead

Free safety Jarius Byrd who was picked by Buffalo 2 picks ahead of Pat White has 9 INTERCEPTIONS OR 2 MORE THAN THE 6 PLAYERS ON OUR TEAM...Would have been nice to move up a few spots instead of the Pat White pick and get those 9 turnovers.

Sadly we went with White and passed on Sharper
we did draft Clemons as a free safety but continue to play Wilson over him...WOW DO WE NEED PLAYMAKERS ON DEFENSE

Yeah but come on. We also could have Willis and Boldin on this team. It's easy to say we could have had so and so after we've seen them play. 31 teams passed on those guys.

It just goes to show how important a QB like Pennington is..

A big part of the offensive turnovers is that we're facing far better defenses than we were last year, particularly against the pass. Whereas we had the easiest schedule against pass defenses last year, we've got the hardest schedule against pass defenses this year.

OPRA=Opponent's Passer Rating against

Opponents (defense):
OPRA (2008-2009): 62.5 completion %, 6.8 YPA, 1.68 TD/INT (419/249), 86 passer rating
Pennington: 67.6 completion %, 7.4 YPA, 20 TD passes/9 INT, 94.6 Passer Rating

OPRA (2009): 59 completion %, 6.2 YPA, .92 TD/INT (188/205), 72.7 Passer Rating
Chad Henne: 59.3 completion %, 6.4 YPA, .83 TD/INT (10/12), 73.8 Passer Rating

The TD/INT difference alone is a huge difference. 419/249 to 188/205

Would Pennington have a better passer rating if he faced the same competition as Henne? Possibly, but we wouldn't be converting such a high % of 3rd downs, and our offense wouldn't be scoring as many points as a result.

I am going to say Brown being out is more important than Pennington being out. 9 of the team's 15 ints have come since Ronnie went down. The wild cat is dead, we have passed the ball 45+ times in two of the three games, Ricky has thrown a pass, and fumbled a bunch of times since Brown went down.

I would be pissed we did not get Byrd if we did not get 2 starting CBs in the first two rounds, eventhough we wasted the White pick. We also got Hartline in the 4th who I think is going to be great #2 WR next year.

I'm just making a point and the past is the past
More important is the LACK OF TURNOVERS your missing the big picture...WE NEED PLAYMAKERS WHO CAN GET TURNOVERS

This is what some people fail to see, just how important Ronnie is to this team. I love how the haters claim he is average and could easily be replaced. Yards are only part of the story.

IMO the reason for those stats is the teams we have played this year over last year. We are playing much higher caliber level teams. Last year we got to play 4 west coast teams at home...SD, Oakland, Seattle, and SF. We won those 4 games by a total of 16 points. We also got to play teams like the Rams, Chiefs, Brady-less Patriots twice, the Jets with a dead-arm Favre.

This year we are playing quality teams week-in and week-out which are less likely to turn the ball over and our secondary has to make the plays when you are playing against Brees, Manning, Brady, etc.. Of course, Henne makes more big plays than Pennington but the trade-off is more turnovers.
