I know there are a lot of Welker fans out there. I happen to be one of them. In fact, I haven't really met anyone who has bad things to say about Welker. Of course, there is a decent sized group that still thinks he is too small and not fast enough, but that's fine. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. But you might want to save any negative rants about those points of view on Welker FOR A DIFFERENT thread.
Ok. On to the stats...
Welker finished with 2129 total yards. He had 2204 yards in 2005, and 1879 yards in 2004. Bringing his grand total in ONLY 3 YEARS to 6212 yards!! I don't know if you can quite grasp that number. I know it's hard for me to wrap my head around. The guy is a production machine.
Wes emerged as THE slot receiver for Miami. He led the team this season in receptions with 67 catches. I don't think anyone saw that coming before the season started. He also finished 2nd behind Booker in yards receiving with 687 yards.
He finished 28th in the NFL on kick return average, BUT he finished 11th for total kick return yards. He finished 14th in punt return average, BUT he finished 3rd in total punt return yards. Once again, the guy is a production machine. Miami was forced to punt entirely too much this season, and Wes only fumbled one kickoff return, and one punt return all season! And Miami got the fumbled punt return back.
Ok. Now let's see where Wes stands on the ALL-TIME MIAMI DOLPHINS RECORD BOOK...
Wes is now in a 3 way tie for most punt returns at 127. He already has the record for most returns in a season at 43. He moved into 2nd place all-time this season for punt return yards at 1232 yards. I know he will break this record early next season. He only needs 98 more yards to do it.
On kickoffs, Wes is 1st all time in total kick returns for Miami at 170. He is 1st all-time in total kick return yards at 3858.
The only thing Wes is lacking are returns for TDs. He only has one KR for a TD. But KR and PR TDs come from two things: a high top speed runner and a good blocking special teams group. Wes has good top speed, but not as fast as some of the top returners in the NFL. But Wes is fast. Don't be fooled. The thing Wes doesn't get is good blocking. Countless times, there are 4 or 5 opponents down on top of him when he catches the kick or punt.
Wes had an AWESOME 2006 year!! I think he has to be up there with Ronnie Brown for offensive MVP. Ronnie broke 1000 yards and had 5 TDs, which is good. But Ronnie also missed a bunch of games at the end with an injury. Wes never missed a single game.
Miami should DEFINITELY sign Wes Welker to a new contract. It is VITAL to have a production player like Wes - a guy who gets first downs, good field position, and does just about everything he is asked to do. I would love to see Wes get signed to a new 3 - 4 year deal. He deserves it, and Miami needs him to stay on as the slot WR and PR.
YOU CAN'T STOP WES WELKER!! :D :dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:
