THE WELKER WATCH '06: Final Results

I know there are a lot of Welker fans out there. I happen to be one of them. In fact, I haven't really met anyone who has bad things to say about Welker. Of course, there is a decent sized group that still thinks he is too small and not fast enough, but that's fine. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. But you might want to save any negative rants about those points of view on Welker FOR A DIFFERENT thread.

Ok. On to the stats...

Welker finished with 2129 total yards. He had 2204 yards in 2005, and 1879 yards in 2004. Bringing his grand total in ONLY 3 YEARS to 6212 yards!! I don't know if you can quite grasp that number. I know it's hard for me to wrap my head around. The guy is a production machine.

Wes emerged as THE slot receiver for Miami. He led the team this season in receptions with 67 catches. I don't think anyone saw that coming before the season started. He also finished 2nd behind Booker in yards receiving with 687 yards.

He finished 28th in the NFL on kick return average, BUT he finished 11th for total kick return yards. He finished 14th in punt return average, BUT he finished 3rd in total punt return yards. Once again, the guy is a production machine. Miami was forced to punt entirely too much this season, and Wes only fumbled one kickoff return, and one punt return all season! And Miami got the fumbled punt return back.

Ok. Now let's see where Wes stands on the ALL-TIME MIAMI DOLPHINS RECORD BOOK...

Wes is now in a 3 way tie for most punt returns at 127. He already has the record for most returns in a season at 43. He moved into 2nd place all-time this season for punt return yards at 1232 yards. I know he will break this record early next season. He only needs 98 more yards to do it.

On kickoffs, Wes is 1st all time in total kick returns for Miami at 170. He is 1st all-time in total kick return yards at 3858.

The only thing Wes is lacking are returns for TDs. He only has one KR for a TD. But KR and PR TDs come from two things: a high top speed runner and a good blocking special teams group. Wes has good top speed, but not as fast as some of the top returners in the NFL. But Wes is fast. Don't be fooled. The thing Wes doesn't get is good blocking. Countless times, there are 4 or 5 opponents down on top of him when he catches the kick or punt.

Wes had an AWESOME 2006 year!! I think he has to be up there with Ronnie Brown for offensive MVP. Ronnie broke 1000 yards and had 5 TDs, which is good. But Ronnie also missed a bunch of games at the end with an injury. Wes never missed a single game.

Miami should DEFINITELY sign Wes Welker to a new contract. It is VITAL to have a production player like Wes - a guy who gets first downs, good field position, and does just about everything he is asked to do. I would love to see Wes get signed to a new 3 - 4 year deal. He deserves it, and Miami needs him to stay on as the slot WR and PR.

YOU CAN'T STOP WES WELKER!! :D :dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:

Agree 1000000%

Wes MUST be our first off-season signing priority!! The one bright spot (aside from Ronnie) in a dim season for the Fins...

One of the NFL's worse/slowest kick returners.

Good, dependable slot receiver.. absolutely nothing more.

Im very happy for Wes. this was a really impressive thread my man. Nice work.

Wes is a tough little guy but we need to move on. He's taking up 3 playmaker spots and he's not a playmaker. His averages are mediocre for a wide receiver and kick returner, and ok on punts.

Stopping by this thread to dump one sentence negative remarks is lame. Save it, or spend some time explaining yourself, [mod]personal attack[/mod]

Edit: And he isn't taking up 3 roster spots. Get a clue.

Welker is definitely an asset and stepped up which cannot be said for a lot of guys on the team this year.

ON THE SIGN WELKER BANDWAGON!!!!!

I like Wes, but the one thing I DON'T like is he's not explosive enough on kickoff returns. I know he's giving 110%, but that doesnt translate to being a great kickoff returner. The fact that he's 28th in average kick return but 11th in total yards tells me he consistently gets you a decent return but won't be a game changer.

I won't respond to the last remark, because you'll be banned for it anyways.

And I've explained myself on this issue quite a few times.. it doesn't take a professional NFL analyst to watch Wes Welker as a return man and realize that he's the DEFINITION OF A V E R A G E.. if you think he's more than average as a returner, then maybe you're the clueless one? When it comes to returner kicks, Wes Welker and "dangerous" doesn't even belong in the same sentence. He's not a good one at all. Quoting the guy's KR yards is also very meaningless.. how many more kicks did he run back than the guys behind him? He's NOT explosive at all. He has one career return, and it was a completely blown special teams effort by Baltimore where the guy almost got ran down by a LINEBACKER with 4.7-4.8 speed. Speed surely isn't everything, and it may be overrated in some cases.. but special teams wise, speed kills. Wes Welker is the slowest return man I've ever seen in my life, and that is a problem for this team. Hopefully, he's replaced back there next year.

I give the guy all the credit in the world for his heart, desire, and toughness. He's a pretty solid #3 slot WR, but absolutely nothing more. If he's anything more than that as a FOOTBALL PLAYER in your mind, then that's pretty sad.

I didn't attack you, so why get so offensive? Are you in love with the man or something? Did I hurt your feelings by presenting the truth about your favorite player? :boohoo:

I agree. He is so consistent. It's awesome. But he isn't the kind of kick returner that you feel can break it for a TD at any time. However, I do find myself wondering just how good the field position will be. He is a field position machine - a production player.

Yeah, of course he has high total yard numbers.

But it's the AVERAGE that counts. That's like saying it's amazing for a WR to get 1000 yards on 500 catches.

He's a decent slot receiver with good hands, not all that much more. It just shows how pathetic this team is.

Thanks for messing up this thread that I spent some time putting together with a two sentence rant, and then a much longer ramble. :shakeno:

I didn't mess up this thread.. you're just upset that I stopped the love fest to bring some facts.

I have YET to see you go against my "rant" that he's an AVERAGE AT BEST return man, so I'll take the win and be happy about "ruining" your thread......

This is a forum where we are allowed to have opinions.. I brought my opinion, RESPECTFULLY unlike you calling people "jackasses". Deal with it.

Well, I was hoping to get some Welker fans in here to talk about how awesome Welker's season was. It was a bad season overall for the team, but Wes played well. He has been with Miami for 3 seasons and has improved each year.

Unfortunately, there are too many people that get kicks out of ranting about how much this sucks or how that is not enough - a bunch of pessimists. Oh well. I will edit to opening entry to warn about the garbage after the first post.

Thank you...........

I'm tired of these love fests for decent overall players.

People overrate Welker because of his heart. Credit him for what he is, people.. but stop making him out to be anything more than that. :rolleyes2
