4th and 1, down by 10, 8 mins to go. For me, you go for it, even at your own 20.

So, why did not run a play, waste seconds and then burn a timeout?! Why not go for it, or failing that, if you decide to punt, don't waste the Time Out. Take a 5 yard penalty and save the time out.

This is the worst coaching I've seen! Or am I missing something?

The intent of the play was to try and get the Texans to jump offside. I don't think they planned running anything out of that formation. When it didn't work they had to use the time out. I don't think it was a bad call. With 8 min. left you still have a chance if you punt it away. It would have been a dumb move to try and go for it and possibly come up short being on the 20 with that much time on the clock.

Yeah, because our defense was doing such a great job of stopping anything at all. Even their backup rb got over 100 yards. You're not going to get 2 possessions with only 8 minutes to go unless your defense is ballin'.

Even if they didn't want to go for it, calling a timeout there is not only pointless, but hurts you when you do get it back with whatever's left on the clock. Simply take the 5 yard penalty and kick if that's your decision. But they should have gone for it. I thought they grew a pair there for a minute but should have known better.

Danniel Thomas had been torching them all day, and you cant trust him to get one measely yard?

No, you're not missing anything. I will defend Tony S. from time to time but this was a clear example of not putting the game in its proper context. They're down two key defenders and they need to get 10 points with an offence that still struggles inside the 20 and there's only 8+ minutes left. Do the math, Tony. Thomas was running hard and effectively all day; it's a no-brainer with the time left on the clock. You simply can't punt the way that game was going. Banking on a 3 and out with Dansby and Davis out was not wise. Take your chances on fourth and one for sure.

I will forever blame Bill Parcells for hiring this moron in the first place. Daniel Thomas would have gotten that half yard. Did he really think that the Texans would jump offsides. I guess he thought the Texans were as stupid as he is. Sparano gotta go!!!

I would have taken the penalty....rather than waste the time out
Rathe r than Lex and bush in the back field..... I would have out DT and Bush back there... with bush you have to guard the flats, with DT you have to watch the middle.
if you were bluffing 5 yds makes no difference.
just like earlier in the game... rather than run thomas on the draw on third down....take the shot. When carp is on 4 - 8 yards on a draw really doesnt matter

No They didn't "Have to call a Timeout" in that spot, they could have let the play clock run out, take the penalty and then kick the ball if that's what this staff thinks gave us the best chance in winning this game but I'm with JDOE on this one, we all watch the game and I'd assume the coaches did or at least should have, so what would give them the inclination with 8:00 mins left that even if we had stopped them, that it wouldn't AT MINIMUM, take 4 mins of clock away from us??? So what it was on our 20 that was the game right there regardless, I knew it and if some joe shmoe sitting at home knows this why is it our coaches don't? OK so they call a timeout when drawing them offsides doesn't work, so I'm thinking...OK, so they tried and fail to draw them and now must want a more solid play called to get the first down....then they come out to punt it away?&%@:{^ What is this ("Braintrust"?) thinking during games and during the week because it sure can't have anything to do with football at all. I don't know why or where Parcells thinks Tony was a good choice for a coach but I think he really has absolutely no idea what he doing now and possibly never did. Everything is fouled on this team now and the Right side of our O-Line is in the most serious need of immediate fixing but it all needs an overhaul.

I was going to start my own separate thread on why did the Phins waive the white flag and curl into the fetal position on 4th and One, but when I saw "The Worst Call Ever Thread" I knew it had to be about this play. This is why Sparano and the rest of the coaching stuff can just kiss my azz. I hope Sparano gets fired soon. The only chance we had at a comeback was going for it here. We get into the red zone repeatedly and we stop going with what works. Carpenter also gets a big F.U....missing gimme FG's should also get you a pink slip. Lets get a kicker here who can also kick the ball out of the end zone. Sparano, Caroll, Carpenter, ....find a new profession.

I agree. The I understand the logic behind trying to get the defense to jump but they might as well have taken the penalty or just ran a play. All momentum was lost after they called the timeout and had to punt.

I didn't agree with going for it deep in our zone with 8 min left but I respected the risk involved in trying to win. Then tony chickened out and made himself look real bad

I knew when I saw the title of this thread it had to be about this play. What a ****ing joke. When they burned the time out, I screamed at my TV that I knew Sparano didn't have the balls to actually go for it there. I've had enough. Whenever Ross wants to fire this clown at this point is fine with me.

I don't think I'll ever be able forget the stupidity that call. You don't get to remember every play forever. So.. uh thanks, Sparano.

Personally, I think it was gutless not to go for it. But then to hope for the incredibly unlikely event that the Texans jump offsides when you're down 2 scores in the 4th quarter. Knowing damn well you're either going to have to burn an extremely precious TO or take a delay that pushes your punter against the endzone. It is such an idiotic move. Burn a 4th quarter TO when you're behind by 2 scores. Just to punt. GTFO Tony. You ****ing complete incompetent.

Should have never gotten rid of Polite if you have no faith in your current players to get two feet. I think Polite was 90+% on 4th and 1 plays. Where is your substitute or the same damn play for Hilliard at. Nobody stopped it the past two years.............you dumba$$ Sparano!

this time out kinda reminded me of the end of first half time out against the saints, they were going to kick a field goal, we call TO, then they decide to go for it and score a TD. I realize that this is a totally different situation, but the same theme remains...total missuse of timeouts, sickening

furthermore, why do we not go for it on 4th and goal from inside the five yard line two weeks in a row? no balls. for 3 years we have settled on fieldgoals in the redzone. it's about time we have a little better playcalling and grow a pair and go for it like some of the more agressive (read successful) teams do.
