Alright, so it happened again... we chose a bad year to "suck." Last time, we had Alex Smith, RB, Benson, Cadillac, and others high on the board - nothing to exactly get excited about - we made the right choice IMO out of a mediocre group with RB.
Then for the most part, the same thing repeats itself... we chose another poor year to "suck." It was like Deja Vu'... and I already was fearing the worst... here we go again, watch them pick Matt Ryan, or God Forbid, a over hyped RB that couldn't shake off my little cousin to add to our coral...
I almost didn't want to look... and then...
The FO used an alien concept in Davie... Common Sense.
Forget sexy picks, forget trading down (NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE wanted the first pick in this draft - this was probably never an option)....
Jake Long was the pick that I wanted, and thank God, they picked him up. It just made sense, it was a safe pick... or at least the safest one from a "sub-franchise player" group.
Jake Long can really be thought of as a 2-for-1 pick. By picking him up, you instantly anchor your RT spot with Carey - that was an extra incentive. The guy is massively big, very eloquent which is surprising in an O-Line player... down to Earth, and well, at least he said the right things.
When you are rebuilding, you expect a lot of 'non-sexy' players, which is exactly what this office has done up to now. You secure the foundation, and now we have a line that for the love of God will let us use a 5-step, or hey maybe even a 7-step drop!?!? Thats amazing. We ran the ball pretty decent last year, so now we have a LT that loves to run block, and a stud @ RT in Carey that loves to pancake people... run left OR right now, as opposed to just left - nice.
Personally, I was elated that by the looks of things, we have a very competent FO, and I honest to God can't remember the last time I remotely thought of that.... They knew who their guy was, they went out and signed him before the draft even started... it was beautiful, not to mention unprecedented.
I think that things are certainly starting to look up, and the Jake Long pick serves as a great omen for the fin future.
On another note, I am absolutely enjoying watching the pats go down in flames... too awesome. Hand over the tapes ma'boy....
