Even though we lost, I have to say I'm much more optimistic about our team's chances now that Feely's under center and Gordon's in position to start. The Oline played decently and if we cut down on some of those penalties we should be in good shape. I'll also feel a lot better with Konrad and Bowens back.
Action plan for next Sunday:
1. Start Jay Williams at DE opposite JT. All this guy does is make plays. I say give him the start and see what he can do.
2. Activate Leonard Henry as backup to Gordon.Henry is big and tough and knows the playbook. We're down to just two backs now. Hopefully Minor will be available as an emergency back up.
3. Play more two tight end sets. Feely obviously feels comfortable throwing to the middle. Because of our shortage at the RB spot, let's go two TEs.
Minor Observations:
Say what you will, that "fumble" by McMichael that was overturned (the one Chambers recovered) was a horrible call by the refs. You add that back to the total for AJ and the kid has two hundred yards in one half of football. Looks like Feely's capable of having a three hundred yard game if in there for the full sixty minutes. The one interception was bad, but he was hit while throwing. I'm sure DW and Trestman are coaching Feely to look to the deep outside instead of only to the middle (where McMichael is). As soon as teams start doubling McMichael, Chambers and Booker are going to be wide open.
Penalties killed us in this game. We have to get this stuff fixed.
Lamar Gordon played phenomenally for just three hours of preparation. Imagine what he's going to do with a full week's work.
Oline played admirably. Pass blocking was decent to good. Carey came in and played well. Run blocking, while inconsistent, showed flashes. Consider the fact that our top two running backs were running on bad ankles and our third back didn't know the offense. We still ran it okay.
Bryan Robinson? Who is this guy? I thought he played very well. Never heard of him until today (when I watched the game). Did we get him in a trade? We really needed him because Zganina has shown he's a liability against the run on first and second down. Robinson, while he made some mistakes, looks pretty solid in the middle. When Bowens comes back he'll fit right in as athird down tackle.
Jay Williams has earned the starting job in my opinion. Ilike the way he plays. He stays after the play and he has nice pass rush skills. I think our Dline, once Bowens comes back and Robinson gets the hang of things, will be very good.
What happened to Ronald Flemming? Is he still on the team? Anyone know. He's a good player. Maybe he's just injured.
Rest of the AFC East looks very good, but I like the new talent we've put together on offense. When they gel and when Konrad is in there, then we'll see how good we really are. Defense needs to correct some things (containment on cut back runs).
