Just a couple things, some mentioned some not.
It was said that the ex-players are sueing in large part because of the bounty situation. That is completely not true. They have been talking about old players sueing for years. Sure the bounty thing fueled the fire but the lawsuits were already going to happen. Goodell came down so hard on them because it would help their causes with the lawsuit, even though he had very little actual proof of the players doing anything wrong. I also think it had alot to do with the Saints winning the "Who Dat" situation with the NFL. Goodell got beat and lost money. Goodell does everything with money, and only money, in mind. And favoring certain teams/players helps the NFL make money, at least he thinks it does. I would argue that keeping it fair and allowing players to actually play football would make more money. Allowing smaller market teams to truely get the same calls and benefits that his sweetheart organizations get would boost fans and their loyatly more than all these upset fans. No I'm not suggesting that the whole NFL is fixed.
Yes, alot of fans enjoy good defense. And if it wasn't so villianized even more fans, and the casual fans, would too. I tried watching Arena league, but it just doesn't appeal to me because of the complete lack of defensive action.
Prolonging the life of the product is great, unless you change the product. Football of course can, will, and has to evolve some through the years. You can't expect it to stay completely the same with no rule changes. But the way Goodell goes about it is just wrong. He punishes teams/players for not being truthfull with him, but then he masks his BS decisions as being for safety or competitive fairness when they are 99% about money. I'm not expecting him to say, "I'm doing this for profits." but don't waltz around protecting your friends, punishing people/teams for vague and BS new rules and act like he's genuinely concerned about player safety and fairness. He's not.
So yeah, I don't care for Goodell. He's done some good with the off the field issues. And while I don't agree with alot of the punishment he gave out to guys, overall it has been an improvement. I believe in capitalism and I believe when you have a business you should be able to hire/fire any employee at any time for any unprotected reason. Or no reason at all. I realize that doesnt' 100% apply to the NFL because of the union and the complexity of the 32 owners, etc. So I don't think that players/coaches/organizations are above being punished. I just dont' like the arbitrary way he goes about it.
As for the lawsuit, I think the players have an uphill battle as far as 'winning' any significant 'award' for playing an obviously rough sport. Why are they not sueing their colleges and high schools? There's alot of healthy retired players. Unless the NFL truely was hiding some significant info, the 'award' will be minimal. It would be ironic if the NFL was hiding some information, meanwhile Goodell always sites a person's honesty with him as being paramount.
