CHAD BETTER THAN BRETT ON THE LONG BALL?

Posted by Mike Florio on August 9, 2008, 11:44 p.m.
On Saturday, Jets quarterback Brett Favre addressed the perception that his predecessor, Chad Pennington, has an arm like a limp, um, noodle.
“I think every time I’ve faced Chad, I’ve lost,” Favre said. “He’s played extremely well. . . . In Green Bay a couple of years ago, he played outstanding. I have nothing but the highest regard for Chad.

The problem with the article is it does not adress the fact that he is coming off of his second shoulder injury. Look at the difference in Penningtons own numbers between 02 and 06. His arm strength is fairly being scrutinized at this point in career

Pennington was released from the Jets because he was expendable and thus we get yet another hand me down QB instead of giving one of our young guys like Henne or Beck a chance to prove themselves.

Pennington does more harm than good for the long term. That is just my opinion.

We wont know for two or three years now what Henne or Beck can actually do and that is what I hate about this deal.

Ehh let's be honest here. Henne is going to need some maturation time. I would rather the offensive line gel this season and have Henn wait in the wings instead of coming into such pressure now. With that said, Pennington knows he is not coming in to be a long term option and might even have to ride the bench next season if the coaches see it fit for Henne to start, so why not have him come in, work with a young o-line and tutor Henne to start. It is right now the best option for the team to win some games and not look so disasterous in the process.

I don't think this speaks to Pennington's arm strength... It's just press conference talk. I'd have been surprised if Farve would've said, "yea the guys got a weak arm which is why I'm here."

On another note, I'm more ok with the signing of Pennington than I thought I would be because it's apparent we need a veteran leader & he is fairly football smart... The guy has managed to win games with one of the weaker arms in the league....

as someone else correctly stated it is the deep out that demonstrates arm strength

with the bomb you are throwing over the defense and dropping the ball in the bucket.

throwing on a line in front of a CB on the deep out takes REAL arm strength

Chad is great at using anticipation to compensate. arm strength is overrated

Perfectly said by BigScuingili. Henne is the future of this team. Pennington is the "caretaker/tutor" who will allow this team to gel and build some confidence by winning a few games. Hopefully, when Henne takes over, Pennington will give us a good vetern back up.

the reason pennington throws a good deep ball is because teams put 8 men in the box and every now and than he will catch the d sleeping and hit a wr deep. He still has the worst arm in the nfl

Let's wait and see, Monday Penny will practice with the first team, if he sucks which I hope h doesn't:
I watched tonight's game and Henne looked really good, so on the long run, if Penny's arm cant handle it, I know Henne will step forward..

I think folks who are saying Henne looked real good are looking thru rose colored glasses. Sure the guy threw some nice balls, the one on a rope to #11 for about 20 yards, but right after that he threw a couple pretty crappy balls. He may have poteltial, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, the kid playe what, one quarter of a preseason game against 2nd and 3rd stringers..... Time will tell.

Parcells very likely would have started McCown regardless. I would like to see Henne from day one, but they would probably not do it.

well imo henne is going to be a pro bowl qb in this league not saying beck isnt cause i like both qb's but its just something about henne ive seen that kinda reminds me of marino when he was a rookie i mean henne might not get the chance to stay in there and show what he can do because of all the qb's we have fighting for a spot but ,,and by no means saying he will be the qb that marino is or was but henne will be a po bowl qb in this league he has it all to play in this league for a long time :hi5:

Parcells usually starts the most experienced player out there. I don't think is logical to send our youngest players out there so they can further humiliate the franchise. The signing of Pennington was great in the sense that we had no veteran leadership in this team.

Although it is true his injuries and surgeries seemed to make his arm somewhat weaker through 2006, it is possible that he is totally healed now and may have more zip on the ball than any other QB on the team right now.

It's been pretty obvious from what we've read in the paper that not only are the coaches not happy with the receivers on a daily basis, they have not been overwhelmingly impressed with the young QB's.

Like you said, Henne seems to be vying to be the QB of the future for the Fins. Pennington is not only very smart AND very football smart (haven't had the latter since Marino in a Fins QB), he is also a leader extraordinaire. Those two things can make up for arm strength IF the o-line, receivers and RB's get behind him and support him. Even if he only starts half the season and Henne (or Beck) takes over mid-way through, he will give the coaches and those young players some breathing room.

Pennington is also a business move. Whether you like the signing or not, Pennington makes us more competitive, and as a result, sells more tickets and merchandise.

It guarantees that our Week 1 game will be packed, although I fear that the wrong teams fans will litter the place.
