There are some young players to build around, but we are looking at a total rebuild. Check out the facts.
1. Most importantly, Miami doesn't have a quarterback of the future. There could be a few trade or free agent options like Nick Foles, Derek Carr, Teddy Bridgewater etc. But most likely the team will have to go the draft route and probably spend multiple picks to move up. The dilemma....this is not a great draft for quarterbacks.
2. Defense can't stop the run. We all saw that early on when the roster was being put together. It may be partly scheme with the wide 9, but this is a big problem.
3. Defense can't rush the quarterback or defend the pass. Yikes.
4. Offense doesn't run the ball well, or stick with the run enough.
5. Offensive line needs some physicality in the interior.
6. Got to question the coaches. Burke looks lost, Gase doesn't stick with the run enough. At the same time 4-4 with this team seems almost like a coaching feat.
That's a significant list. Miami has some players to build around. Howard and Fitzpatrick in the secondary are probably the two best players on defense, the two young DT's are decent, Baker at linebacker, maybe McMillan. I like the speed of the wide receivers with Wilson, Stills and Grant, though injuries have hurt there. I like Drake. Tunsil is finally living up to his ability.
Is it time to consider a new coach? That might be the prevailing question. I want to believe in Gase, but this is his third year and the team is, quite simply, putrid on both sides of the ball.
