This just doesn't make sense

Oh we are not? After the latest 5 year rebuild? We still need another rebuild from Grier?
Maybe Grier needs 20 tries at a rebuild before he finally gets it. So check back in 2120 and maybe at that point Grier will have a playoff win to notch on his belt. Oh nevermind, we'll all be long gone by then.

Id say that was a great, future looking trade to me.
Based on what? The discounted value of a future third is a 4th round pick. so you traded a 4th for a 4th? How is that good going three rounds without a pick?
Grier left a lot of good players on the board on days 2 and 3. Got no problem with trading up for Jonah on Friday but not picking until the 5th round yesterday was not smart, imo

You're never stuck with anyone. There is always a way out of a contract in the NFL. They can take the cap hit and deal with the dead money if they really wanted to. If you're rebuilding/retooling, might as well have a down year where you can get the top pick anyway. The mistake they made in 2019, was not hiring a real GM.

No they are pretty stuck…. Contract is guaranteed next two years. Cutting prior to end of 2026 results in a 137 or 99 million in dead cap.

You save nothing and result in heavy net losses as it’s way more dead cap than his salary. Why would you cut the most valuable player to your team while losing money in doing so?

His issue is staying healthy, not being shitty like say Watson or Russell.

It’s discounted because it’s in the future. Next year it’ll be worth more. Possibly double or triple in terms of draft value.

Pick 116 was worth 62 points. Even if they make the afc championship (probably highly unlikely) it’ll be worth 124 points exactly double. If they are a first round exit or worse then you’re looking at around 170+ points almost triple 116’s worth.

An extra player or two especially in the 4th round isn’t changing the outlook of this team most likely. Take the extra valued future pick and continue building the right way.

If your goal is to start over and have the option to draft the top rated QB then what is the point of keeping a QB that will help you win just enough games to prevent you from doing so? Post June 1st cut in 2026 would only be a $6 million cap hit and just $62.4 million in dead cap. So NO if the team is in rebuild mode with a new GM who wants to draft their own QB in 2027, cutting Tua in 2026 would be the best option.

Say the bold part again.

We're at the top of the 4th today at 116. Haven't made a pick since early in round 2. Still have needs at S, CB, DT and OL.
On the board we have several good DBs like Ransom, Billy Bowman, Quincy Riley and OL like Miles Frazier and DTs like Joshua Farmer.

What does Grier do? He trades out w Texans for a 2026 third and a 6th. He needs players this year, he has gaping holes in this roster that he created. he either knows he's retiring next season or is so confident that he's safe or going to be kicked upstairs that he's teflon.
The value of getting a third rounder next year is a 4th rounder so what was the point? We get an extra 6th and give up one of our 7th's while letting another round worth of talent go off the board.

Full draft recap to come, like Gordon and I think Phillips but the DBs left me wanting more and once again, Grier did not maximize his 10 draft picks
the national pundits by and large seem to agree with you: https://finheaven.com/threads/the-draft-battle-royale-finheaven-versus-the-pundits.387105/

Hopefully that trade was about qb draft ammo in next years class. That’s all I got.

We're stuck with Tua for another 2 seasons. We won't be able to commit to an actual full rebuild until we're out of his contract. Because of that, both Grier and probably McD will be here until the end of the 2026 season.

After the 26 season the team will have a new GM, coach, QB and a lot of new players.
Or maybe they finally have a winning formula--evidenced by the much different feel of this draft class--and the front office doesn't get turned over (aside from the possibility of Weaver being lured away to a HC job). Imas for QB you may be right and if so let's hope it is because Ewers gets healthy, takes to coaching, and has a Brady-esque ascendance.

if you hire people who fail and allow them to re-sign players prematurely to contracts with a lot of guaranteed money then you need to accept that you will be wasting some money when things don't work out. If your goal is to be in the best position to draft a new franchise QB in 2027 then you're going to have to deal with a lot of dead cap.

That is the nature of the NFL. They did it to some extent in 2019. If you can find someone willing to trade you a late round pick after June 1st to take Tua, then you would gain a net in cap space with a lot less dead money.

Ross put the team in this position with his bad decisions. If he seriously wants to allow the team to start over then he can deal with some wasted money. He's done it for almost 17 years already, so what's a few million more? Who knows whether Ross won't decide to pass the team onto his daughter next year or to sell it.

The point is that in the NFL if you put people in charge that end up failing at the set goals and you decide you want to move one you're going to have to deal with the consequences. Such as a little bit of wasted money.

How many years has Grier been in charge? What do the Dolphins have to show with the teams he's built. If Ross cares more about some dead cap rather than trying to figure out how to build a contending team, then I hope he moves on soon. As a fan I want an owner who will do whatever is necessary to put their team in the best position to win Championships.

No team in the NFL is going to cut\trade a player that is going to cost them $62.4 million in dead cap.

Period.

Then when you add in the dead money we will likely have from Hill, Ramsey and probably Chubb, there's just no way.
