Frerotte & Chambers Can't Cut It
If Linehan is going to insist on running the offense he ran in Minnesota, in which there is a pretty strong lean toward the downfield pass, we're gonna have to get ourselves a damn good QB and at least one WR who can't be shut down by anyone. In other words, Frerotte and Chambers aren't gonna cut it.
In a West Coast Offense, by contrast, you can have a QB who isn't so accurate downfield, because the idea is to get the ball to the receivers where they can run after the catch and make plays with their athleticism rather than relying on the QB's accuracy downfield.
In Linehan's vertical offense, things are based more on timing between the QB and receivers on downfield passes. You get more bang for your buck when you hit those long passes, but when you don't hit them you have a lot of three-and-outs, and you can get your defense REAL tired.
Those of us who were wondering whether Linehan was a product of Culpepper and Moss may have been on to something.
And those who bashed Wannstedt for being so conservative on offense and putting games in the hands of his defense -- well, now we're seeing what the opposite looks like.
