This offense will CREATE big name receivers, not require them

So you honestly believe that Jordy Nelson would put up the numbers he did last year as a number #1 receiver on say, the Bucs?

hahaha so lets break this ridiculous statement down.

1. Jordy Nelson is not the number 1 receiver on Green Bay. Greg Jennings is, and if Jordy went to TB, he would be their best receiver ( yes he is better than Mike Williams)
2. Excelling does not mean the "putting up the same numbers"
3. Aaron Rodgers vs Josh Freeman. Do we really have to discuss why that would make your suggestion slightly skewed?

Playing with one of the best (if not the best QB) obviously helps out with your production, but I dont think the WCO is "MAKING" Jordy Nelson a great receiver.
In college he was an All American his senior year and had what like 1600 yards and 11 Touchdowns? Then he was drafted in the 2nd round of the draft. People are making it seem like this white kid just came out of nowhere and he is only good because hes on the packers in the west coast offense lol

Playing with Aaron Rodgers helps, but being a great young receiver in this game isnt because hes simply playing in the WCO. He would be a very good receiver and excel on every team in this league that has a half competent quarterback (just a preemptive response to "what if he was on the jags with blaine gabbert, would he exel")

Not every team has one of these "Elite Number 1 receiving options"...just like not every team has a Primier running back stable...or two great pass-catching TEs.

i understand where you're coming from, I felt it as of two days ago. But after talking with some friends and reading some posts on the internet, i realize: Hey, let's try to find out what we have first, before we start looking for the next Jerry Rice.

again, apples to oranges... looking for the next jerry rice and thinking you can just plug mediocre guys into the WCO and claiming the position is filled, we dont need good receivers are different things.

going into this rebuilding year, which make no mistake is a rebuilding year, with the mindset of, 'okay, we arent going to worry about aggressively fixing the WR position in year 1" is totally different then what a lot of people think is "well the WCO doesnt NEED great WR... we will make them from our mediocre ones"

in 2008 Tedd Ginn and Greg Camarillo were our top 2 recievers, just sayin'.

Okay, agreed. I'm not in that camp of "WCO doesn't need a great WR".....every System would love a great WR. It's just like you said, we aren't AGGRESSIVELY looking to upgrade the WR position drastically. and I've learned to be ok with that.

I really think our wr core will be just fine. I think someone will emerge from the bottom of the depth chart and we'll be set. My biggest problem in the past is that I swear our recievers are never open. I would watch other teams on tv and at least 3 or 4 times a game their recievers would be running in open space. I havent seen that here in forever and I'm hoping with the change of coaching staff and strategy it will become more of a common occurrence.

Some of you are missing the point. Of course we want to have a Greg Jennings or Jordy Nelson. We don't have them and we weren't in a position to get a #1 in FA and getting Tannehill in the 1st was more important. We won 11 games in 08 with great receiving #s from Ginn 56 catches, Camarillo 55 catches, and Bess 54, with 5 TDs combined??? We will be fine until we find a true #1 and maybe Cunningham, Gates, or Matthews develop into a great receiver??? We also have some weapons at TE and RB that we haven't had before. Who thinks we're winning the Super Bowl next year??? Not me. We will need another draft or 2 before we are truely a contender but I think we can make the playoffs this year with solid play and good coaching. Let's be patient and enjoy this team being built correctly for once.

If you like it, I love it. I'm fond of Jordy Nelson as a receiver, and I'm not taking anything away from his talent as a WR, but let's not diminish what having Aaron Rodgers and a great scheme can do for your career. I used the Bucs as an arbitrary scenario because I don't believe he would put up those kinds of numbers on that team. Wes Welker would not have the type of season he had (122 rec 1500+ yds, 9 TDs) if he didn't play with Brady in a pass happy offense that uses him absolutely perfectly. This is not taking away from Welker as a football player, but that type of production does not make him a good #1 receiver on a team with an average - good QB, that will have the same prodution. I think people get too wrapped up in the numbers and almost never factor in the team they play for, QB they play with, and scheme they play within.

I really like Cunningham. I can't wait to see how he develops and graps this offense. I really think come year 2-3 he's going to blossom and start being talked about as one of those elite receivers that was grabbed in the late rounds. I think Mathews is a little more of a project, but I love what i'm seeing and hearing from Cunningham.

I'm not sure that is accurate. I think that the staff would have loved to get one of the better receivers in this draft but for whatever reason, it didn't happen. We had quite a few holes to fill. There are still a few left in my opinion but I feel that this team got better during the off season. Better coaching, deeper talent pool, etc..... That should translate into the Dolphins fielding a more competitive team. It remains to be seen what that means from a win/loss standpoint. Barring any crazy injuries or such, we should be a better team this season..

Of course we want a better group of receivers than we probably have right now but with a lot of those guys we don't really know what we have - especially in a WC offense. So let's see what we have first and then see about improving where necessary

It's not like we will be contending this season anyway so this season is about development

The likes of Bess and Hartline will be good for Tannehill's development - a lot better than if Marshall was still here
- they won't be telling him just to throw them the ball regardless of coverages
- they don't have freakish athletic ability so this will mean Tannehill will have to develop accuracy
- not having one outstanding receiver means we will spread the ball around and that will teach a young QB to go through the progressions
- most of the time they will run the right route and if they don't they will own up to it. It is important for a young QB to know when he made a mistake and when he didn't
- they won't have throw a strop on the sideline demanding that coaches bench the young QB

im just glad davone bess is going to be a bigger part of our offense now. I think davone bess has been our best receiver the last few years but because of his speed he hasnt gotten alot of praise but now that marshall is gone i think he gets the opportunity he deserves, i am sure davone is going to put extra work this season and be prepared for what is coming. Philbin is going to expect him to produce alot more now that marshall is not here.
