Miami Dolphins Played Physical In Loss

It’s my opinion that for many reasons is shared by some, not all, of our readers. Yesterday’s loss was partially due to poor coaching. I said as much yesterday. Now a full day later, well not quite, I can sit back and revel in what might have been one of the Miami Dolphins toughest games and best played. Despite the loss.
There were no superstars on Sunday that left you shocked in amazement. Ryan Tannehill didn’t lead a long time consuming drive and Daniel Thomas didn’t control the yards with his legs anymore than the offensive line attacked the Detroit Lions tough defensive front. On defense Cam Wake was his normal self and Brent Grimes was as one member on Finheaven dubbed him…Optimus Grimes to Detroit’s Megatron. Grimes played a very solid game.
So why is this such a good loss? Well it’s not but it was a team loss. The offense didn’t lose the game anymore than the defense did. The Dolphins played a very tough Lions team. They have the number one defense in the entire league and the much maligned Miami offense should have put two more touchdowns on the board coming once again into the redone and stalling. For all it’s hype the Dolphins defense shut down the Lions high-powered offense for most of the game unfortunately the last drive was the drive they needed the most.
It’s hard to swallow a loss but yesterday’s loss showcased far more positives than negatives. We know that no one can stop Cam Wake and Brent Grimes can play against anyone. We know that the Dolphins linebackers are better than we credit them for and that the depth on defense is far better than some teams starters. We also know that the Dolphins offense is better than just good. They aren’t great yet but yesterday could have been. Instead they showed us there is still some work to be done. We also know that Ryan Tannehill is one tough son of a bitch.
In the case of Ryan Tannehill it’s safe to say that he has turned that corner in his career. He has become the leader that we said he couldn’t be. He showcased that leadership ability when he chased down his own interception to save a touchdown. We saw him repeatedly get up after being knocked down and getting right back into the pocket to take another hit and get the ball away. Tannehill didn’t look great on Sunday but he looked good enough and good enough is enough to win in this league. The best part is that he is only hitting his stride and has yet to reach his potential peak.
This week the Buffalo Bills will come to Miami for a Thursday night game. Ryan Tannehill has yet to beat the Bills and he is going to need to. The Dolphins season could realistically hang on Thursday’s outcome. At the very least it could put the Dolphins in very bad position for a post-season run.
The Dolphins lost an it sucks but there were plenty of positives to take away from the game none more evident than the teams physicality.

It seems that talent is the issue more so than coaching. We see Tannehill's progress against mediocre defensive fronts. But the OL talent and running game without Moreno are simply not good enough to allow the offense to close out these games in which the Dolphins are clinging to a lead late in the game.

I know that others will say that it is the coaching in the last 4 minutes that is holding the team back. I get that, but I disagree. I see a Dolphins team that is playing as hard as they can. I see a team that is well prepared that unfortunately fails to execute in key moments. If some people attribute that to coaching rather than talent, so be it. This team needs one more year to purge and upgrade the Ireland garbage that infects its roster.

If Philbin is a lousy coach, then what does that make Mark Trestman, Mike Smith, Lovie Smith, Marvin Lewis or Ron Rivera? Or how about Tom Coughlin's team allowing 350+ rushing yards yesterday? Have the Dolphins ever been an embarrassment under Philbin and been so thoroughly unprepared? Sure, you could point to the last two games last year, but with that OL just how talented was that team? As frustrating as the Green Bay and Detroit losses were, the reality is that this team is one year away from truly being ready to compete.

Yep, agree with that write up. Also agree that Danny knows nothing about the NFL. And that's being kind.

I will say that Tannehill is one tough SOB, and that he's getting somewhat better in his consistency. He is better at being a roll-out, read-option style of QB than a pocket passer, although personally I'd prefer an above average pocket passer who could run when needed. However, IMO he (or the team) will never be very good unless he can figure out how to connect on those deep passes. With no serious threat of the deep ball, opponents can concentrate on defending the running game and short passes.

We lost the game, and we lost a top three player. There are no moral victories in the NFL. Finish or go home.

Oh really....why, cause I'm sick and tired f moral wins and excuses? If you know so much why aren't you working for an NFL team?

The Dolphins are at least number 1 in something -- fan apologists. Moral victories, played hard, played with heart, etc. do not count in the standings. It is really sad some people just don't get that. Maybe they will when the team just misses out on the playoffs -- again.

We need to win games like we do win games, by multiple scores. We're now 5-5 when we have the lead and the ball late in the game, we should be more like 7-3 or 8-2 in that type of situation. Who's fault is that? I don't know but our offense is 0 for 9 when attempting to throw the ball to close out the game. I watched the Bills game yesterday and the Chiefs were in a similar situation, the ball and a one score lead with less than 4 minutes left, and Alex Smith was able to make the throw.

I would put money on the fact that we're the worst in the league in that stat.
We are one of the worst in the league on obvious passing downs.
We are one of the worst in the league inside the opponents 10 yard line. (29th)
We are[STRIKE] one of [/STRIKE]the worst in the league at the deep ball. (32nd)
We are one of the worst in the league at 4th quarter comebacks/game winning drives.
We are one of the worst in the league at 4th quarter passer rating. (31st)
We are one of the worst in the league at yards per pass attempt. (29th)

I don't know about you, but there seems to be a common theme there to me.

Keep fighting that windmill Don.

Got it but in the end, the defense could not hold the lead

This was clearly a team loss, too many people didn't make a play to get the win.....RT throwing behind Clay to go up 7, Clay not helping his QB who didn't have his best game by making a catch that was catch-able, the D line not getting to QB on the last drive, secondary giving up the winning TD catch....but they all have great moments too, Grimes balling with megatron, safeties hitting everything in sight....special teams making a play that set up a TD....we battled with a very good team, now we have to learn to win these games and I think Philbin has to try to win the game with offense in these situations......It is apparent that the D struggles at the end of the game to get a stop....the offense has to run the clock out in that situation, get more aggressive and not care about turnovers....call the game as if you are behind and need to get in FG range and have no regrets by the outcome.....

You say this but we still have people complaining about trying to pass against Buffalo resulting in the sack/strip/turnover. Just yesterday somebody brought that up. Its a lose-lose situation for us right now.

That's exactly how the Saints lost yesterday, on a sack-strip-fumble deep in their own territory in OT. And that's a team with Drew Brees and Sean Payton and a very good OL. There is risk involved with any strategy. Was Sean Payton wrong to be so aggressive by passing from deep in his own territory?
