My goodness, the Miami Dolphins are the Cleveland Browns of the AFC East. The list is long but here a few reasons why:
1. Their love and admiration for free agents and re-signing them to ridiculous deals.
2. The reputation of not signing players after developing their own players; this after years of consistent bad drafting
3. A head coach who consistently defends mediocrity. He has consistently graded Pouncey and James high. He defends Kiko.
4. QB. The most divisive player in Phins history. His breakout stats in 2016 including after 13 games throwing for 19 Tds and 12 Ints. Not to mention he injured the same knee twice. Bigger picture they drafted a qb who was converted WR #8 overall
5. Lack of identity. Always statistically in the 20's in offense and defense. Why can't they fix one side of the ball?
6. Lack of strategic thinking. You lose your starting qb in 2016 to an ACL injury and they go the entire offseason in 2017 and not do anything, and end up selecting their starter in Aug, 2017 on a guy that was basically retired after a few games in 2016.
7. As with #7, coaching familiarity with former players has been an absolute failure. Bushrod, Larsen, Thomas.
8. The inability to sign players early. Landry should have been locked up last season or season before.
9. Ah, qb. What kind of qb do you want? A fringe playoff qb or one that consistently takes you deep in the playoffs? Mediocrity is the new norm here.
10. No accountability to Ownership. Ross is very clueless. How have personnel decisions kept this FO intact?
It comes down to this. The Miami Dolphins are team of distant memory from the 70's and 80's. In the past 18-19 years, they have refused, through multiple owners and FO's, to address the Oline and QB. The formula is bad. Draft poorly, make it up with free agents, and the refusal to sign players they develop to a long term deal. If more of the status quo occurs this season, both the HC and FO will be fired. But hey, we are used to it
