hmm, he got past him when Bowens and Chester anchored your line...byroan said:We have Traylor now. Mawae can't get past him.

Tim Bowens of 3 years ago was better than Traylor now and Bowens couldnt really keep Mawae contained either. Mawae is probably the most agile C aside from Nalen. If he wants to get out on Zach he'll get there. Whats going to be harder for Mawae is trying to find exactly where ZT will be on that play.byroan said:We have Traylor now. Mawae can't get past him.
Oh they can send Mawae out on ZT as much as they want. The only thing they dont know yet is how much they'll pay for it now if we send blitzers through the Center or "A" gap everytime. :DCsonkaClone said:Zach wouldn't say that "they can't do it" if he wasn't sure about it.
ckparrothead said:Nobody has yet thought about the obvious. In the old defense neither of our defensive tackles were shaded over the center's shoulders. That means that one guard could have theoretically taken up one of our DTs, and another guard could take up the other DT, while Mawae chipped and released out to Thomas.
In this defense, Keith Traylor either lines up on Mawae's right or left shoulder in the 4-3 alignment, or directly in front of him in the 3-4. Where is Mawae going to go? How is he going to literally get AROUND Keith Traylor, who will not only be directly in front of him, but will be purposely engaging Kevin Mawae on just about every defensive play.
You have to remember the old D was nice because if you did it right, you could tie up all three interior linemen with two DTs and ensure that your linebackers stay clean to make tackles. But "doing it right" entailed maintaining balance and power enough so that one of your tackles engaged BOTH the guard and the center. You needed one of your guys to get double teamed at all times in order for it to work right. That never worked with Mawae, because he'd slip right past and nobody would tie him up.
But against a nose tackle, there's no center in the NFL or in NFL history that will consistently slip past even the most mediocre nose tackles in order to release out on the middle linebacker. And if he does, that means Traylor just took the most direct route straight into the ballcarrier's face as he takes the handoff because it's simply too far a distance for a guard to travel and still block Traylor one-on-one out of the play.
Different defense. Mawae vs. Zach is about as applicable now as Ty Law vs. Ronnie Brown.
