Thomas voted smartest defensive player

Too bad we wont have his smarts this year at LB.

Zach being voted the smartest defensive player doesn't surprise me,that was one of the things he was known for doing with us;study, study, study,&more studying. Studying opposing teams and their offenses so he'd know the right calls to make out on the field, along with being a straight stud at MLB.

I remember a few years ago on CBS's pre-game show they did a process of elimination deal to try and figure out the game's top linebacker and Zach beat out everyone else. Since I first became a Phin fan he's been my fav.

I have no link for a quote, but I heard Peyton Manning say on TV once that Zach is the smartest Def player at any position he's ever faced. Peyton would go to the line, make an audible, and Zach would usually call out to our def what change Peyton had made. If Zach had the body of Ray Lewis he'd be the greatest LB ever.

I still get goose bumps reading about Zach, i hate it so much that he isnt with us anymore. Dan Marino was always my favorite player and Zach was #2. But over the last couple of years it turned into Dan 1a Zach 1b or 51% Dan 49% Zach as my all time favorite player.

With votes from six head coaches, Thomas beat out Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis for the top spot. Lewis was the second-leading vote-getter with four nominations. Coaches, encouraged not to vote for their own players, were granted anonymity for their candor. Thirty of the 32 coaches answered this specific question.

But it's hard to argue against Thomas and Lewis as the top two choices. Their production and credentials are well known.

Thomas, who declined to be interviewed for this story, has an astounding 1,642 career tackles. He also has 17 career interceptions and 19.5 sacks.

13 tackles and an int at San Diego WITH ONE ARM! Nuff Said

The vote was between all the NFL coaches

Taylors name also comes up in the dirtiest players thread as one of the top personal foul collectors since 2001. Take it for what it is worth. This one also voted on by coaches.

Have those coaches looked at Jason recently?

Did you notice that Pats safety Rodney Harrison was named dirtiest by an overwhelming margin (11 of 17 votes) . I have said it for years, he loves diving into tackled players as the whistle blows, leads with his helmet and always goes for the hit instead of the ball. Of course the giants and David Tyree are pretty happy about that last one. I am not saying that those things are against the rules, but clearly the league views them as unprofessional at best.

You have to be a smart player to overcome the odds that he has faced as a professional athlete in the NFL.

As soon as I get Madden '09, I'm trading to bring Zach back.

I miss Zach already. He was the best. Hall of Famer for sure.

I agree 100% with Zach being the smartest in the league. We will miss him for a LONG time. I also thought it was great they nailed Rodney Harrison as the dirtiest player in the league. Couldn't think of a more deserving candidate.
