First of I want to give props to WH for finaly taking a head on approach, the desicion to keep Capers along with the GM>Coach format are remarkable desicions. On the other hand, I want to give my input on the HC position, I hate the run, run, pass, punt approach we had with Wanny, though I did like it when Norv Turner or Chan Gailey mixed it up a little with a screen or misdirections, until Wanny handcuffed them again.
I also liked the extreme bipolar approach under Linehan where we would run it wild, to then go 40yds deep the very same drive. I hated the short passing game under Mularkey same as his moronic, silly trick plays.
.
But I have never seen an OC be so creative, within a a conservative playbook as B Schottenheimer, I dont know if you guys caught the NE/NYJ first game, where he called like 5 consecutive no huddles, silent snap count run plays in the 3rd qtr, we are talking about the Jets right, Kevan Barlowe is their RB, they where a bottom 5 rushing offense against a top 5 rushing defense, and in that entire game they ran (as a team) for 150+ yds, and scored on the ground averaging 4.5 yds per carry. Thats being creative a no huddle no snap count on running plays is very productive, tires the defense, the Olineman where just exploding, not blocking any lanes, just pushing their man as further back as posible, their RB wasnt hitting a hole, he was hitting the LOS, and that killed the Pats front 7.
Against us, a very balanced, aggresive top 5 defense, they knew we would blitz the house at them, they knew we would cover and pursue aggresively, they knew we where BIG and athletic, what did he do? Killed us with playaction and screens, Leon Washintons screens where painful, because even if we did take him down, he was burning like 10 seconds dancing around our guys, and in a game as close as that, Time of Possesion is even more important.
Other than Gailey, no other candidate, prepares his gameplan and players so well against the opposing defense. Cameron HAS a gameplan and he sticks to it 16 games. He builds an offense that WILL work, he isnt ready to work with an offense that is outright overmatched by the defense.
Gailey and Schotty work well with struggling offenses and are more creative within a conservative fashion, but Schotty is younger, much much younger than Gailey and has better potential, so I prefer Schotty, though if it where up to me I would be fine with either Gailey or Schotty.
