With the jury out regarding Tua's injury, it really potentially throws a monkey wrench into Miami draft plans. On the one hand, Tua could be good to go and potentially drops into the Dolphins hands. They could pass too deciding he's too big of an injury risk.

But let's say Miami decides to go in a different direction with that first #1, maybe Young, Thomas, Jeudy, Okudah, or Brown. Maybe even a trade down and collect more picks. Hurts, Love and Eason could all be potential targets with that Pittsburgh pick. What are thoughts on these three?

I've read NFL people comparing Love to Mahomes. His best tape is really good. You can see lots of great stuff, but he's also really struggled, throwing a lot of interceptions. He seems like a work in progress and someone who would fit perfectly with a team that has a veteran quarterback. Rivers in LA, Brady in New England, Brees in New Orleans, Big Ben in Pittsburgh. If Miami took him, he would likely sit a year behind Fitzpatrick and/or Rosen.

Hurts is pretty impressive on tape. Doesn't necessarily wow you with his arm, but he is accurate and the best athlete from this bunch. He's one of those guys who can drive a defense crazy and give you chunk yards when he decides to run. Watching the success of Lamar Jackson makes me wonder is Hurts can have similar success. I have read scouting reports that question his ability to read defenses, playing in a more simplified system at Oklahoma where he essentially has one read and then the ability to run if its not open. Is that a fair assessment? Are we looking at a Colin Kaepernick type quarterback, or is there more there?

Eason is the one I've seen the least of. No question he has an NFL size and arm talent.

So, if Tua isn’t medically cleared or there are medical issues then

1a Okudah
1b. Herbert or BPA
1c. BPA
2a. Hurts or Eason, whoever falls
2b. BPA

but if the outlook for Tua is good, the only way to get him is our 1a pick. No need to trade up, that is flat out stupid.

I still think it's likely Miami takes a chance on Tua.

Tua: Don't want him. Never did. Undersized. Injury risk.
Herbert: Love to have him in the second. Won't happen.
Love, Eason: Late 2nd, early third developmental prospects. Maybe if they fall.

If they all declare, then it gets interesting. Love, Eason and Fromm all have regressed a bit over the last month. While Herbert has been steady, he just played his worst game of the year. His cerebral personality worries me. His talent is obvious, but there are areas where he needs improvement. Question becomes, is he top 5 worthy? Love has tremendous upside and potential star power. Do you take a chance on a worldly talent? Can this staff get him to be consistent and get him to the next level? Id take him with the Pittsburgh pick, if he's available? Eason has an arm for the ages. When he's on, he's deadly accurate. But it's his footwork and bad tendencies that are hurting his growth. Is he 1st round worthy? Can he be molded? I'm not sure. But damn his arm is special. Hurst is more athlete than QB at the moment. Not sure he's a 1st or 2nd Day prospect. Round 3 is more likely IMO. Not sure he'll ever put it all together? Fromm has all the intangibles you want, just not very athletic. Could go 1st round? I'd take him with the Houston pick, if he hasn't been taken by that point. More likely a high 2nd rounder. But those intangibles makes him hard to pass up.

I doubt Eason and Love go in the first round. Love might go 3rd or 4th even. in the 3rd, yeah id take him. 2nd round id take Eason

Until the hype train begins in January. There have been talented small school QBs that went early but did not have a spectacular final year in college.

Name that QB (went #2 overall in draft)
  • Final year in college stats:
    • 62% completion
    • 17 TDs
    • 4 INTs
    • 1651 Yds

His play in the NFL has trailed off.

Too many teams need quarterbacks for those guys to drop that far. Maybe 2nd round, but I wouldn't be surprised if both went mid-first.

One of them will slide, maybe more than one.

Every year, some of the highly touted QBs slide.

The real question is which of the prospects are the ones that Grier/Flores value. No one really knows, and if they're smart, they'll keep it that way.

Hurts is more physical a runner than Jackson, similarities with him are going to be the theme of the off season. He's not the same guy though, but because Larmar is tearing it up, there are questions on Tua's health and because the depth of this QB class is extremely questionable, I have little doubt he'll be elevated into the first round, wouldn't shock me if he was the 2nd QB taken and a top 10 pick. Someone will think they are getting the second coming of Larmar. I mentioned this in another thread but the issue I have with Hurts is he's seems to give up on the pass a little too early and defaults to the run, when he runs he doesn't shy away from contact, seems to welcome it, it works at college level because he's such a big and strong guy but can he do it against grown ups in the NFL ? I think Jackson is a little more accomplished as a passer also. I like Hurts as my #3 guy right now though, definitely someone you would like to take a chance on but as I also said in that other thread, you need to build the Offense around him like Baltimore have with Larmar.

Eason is probably a diamond in the rough much like Love. I just feel something isn't there though with the kid, he should be tearing it up there at Washington but after a great start to the year he's regressed badly. He's a 3rd rounder to me, I don't think we are in the market for a mid round guy like him.

Love isn't ready, as much as many of us would love that not to be the case, he's just not shown enough to want you to bet the farm on him. Anyone taking him in the first is out to lunch IMHO, the guys on 3YPC made a great point that his best case scenario may be going back to school but graduating to a program like OU to get some real coaching under his belt, can't disagree with that but if he can't get that transfer and does declare, hope for his sake he goes to a situation where someone can mould the wonderful clay he has.

The thing that always stood out for Jackson. besides his athletic ability, was his deep ball accuracy. What a combination for someone who can buy second chances. Wilson has that in spades as well. Teams can't defend against that.

I don't see the great deep arm with Hurts. But I do like his game. It would take a creative mind to bring out the best in him.

If Miami drafts him, you can count on a dramatic improvement in the running game.

A side note on Jordan Love. Tony Pauline on twitter has reported, Jordan Love is going to declare for the 2020 draft. He states, Love has chosen an agent or representation.
