1.) Ronnie Brown

I was thinking back to that 2005 draft and how lately, it has seemed like Saban really made the best choice (compared to Cadillac and Benson) but I think one thing that has held true since their rookie reports came out is that indeed Cadillac does have better natural RB instincts than Ronnie and I think Benson does as well (when looking at his latest work with the Bengals).

Now, I'm not saying that I would've rather we drafted Cadillac or Benson or even Braylon "Stone Hands" Edwards. Obviously, those guys have been boarderline disasters for their respective franchises. And I like Ronnie and think of him as a complete RB.

But...Ronnie just does not have good instincts/vision. His hands, power and straightline speed make up a lot for his below-average vision and instincts. That spin move he made in the backfield with no defender even within reach of him was just a good example of Ronnie lack of feel for the position. He also doesn't seem to have the on-field speed that his combine 4.3 40 time would've led you to believe.

Ultimately, I doubt this regime gives him the long term deal. I think we'll either franchise tag him for one more year or, maybe franchise tag-and-trade him.

2.) Ted Ginn, Jr.

Well, the magician was up to his old disappearing act again last night. I do like Ginn on KRs though and think he actually NEEDS to be doing KRs just so we can keep him involved in games.

Our offense doesn't really use a "#1 WR" and Ginn isn't one anyway. I think he will prove to me much like Ronnie in his career as in a good-but-never-great player with always below average stats. Not bad players but you probably don't want them on your fantasy teams.

Does Ginn deserve some slack b/c Penny can't get the ball deep? Yes. But Ginn has to take the blame for constantly being knocked off his routes at the LOS.

Ultimately, if Brandon Marshall wasn't such a head case and/or Anquan Boldin wasn't so old now, I would trade Ginn and Ronnie for either of them.

I also would've traded Ginn, Ronnie and Penny for Cutler in a heartbeat earlier in the offseason when Cutler was on the block but...whatever.

3.) B-Ry Hartline

Well, I called this one right before the game last night. I knew Harline was going to win/keep that #2 starting WR job. I wasn't really aware of Hartline before the draft (despite being quite the draftnik myself) but I loved everything I read about him post draft. I hadn't really noticed during the combine drills that he had ranked so high in every single category (including 3 cone drill).

Harline is like a healthy-Camarillo 2.0 with more size and speed. We really needed that b/c Bess wouldn't have looked as good as a #2. Bess really works best in the slot.

If we're lucky, Hartline may be even better than Camarillo and may start to remind us of a young Ed McCaffrey.

5.) Sean Smith

Wow! Loving this guy. He might get beat every now and then this season when he goes up against super fast WRs but he'll make up for it every game with some big plays.

6.) Vontae Davis

Strong run support, solid tackling and nice cover skills. This guy isn't the real deal. Maybe not as spectacular a player as Sean but he will prove to be worth his pick - especially considering the hefty price tag to sign FA vet CBs.

Ultimately, I know we have to be happy with the play of Nate Jones and Ty Culver in the nickel and dime respectively, but I would love to get Vontae onto the field with Sean maybe moving into a center fielder roll for nickel and dime packages.

7.) Others

Moses, Soliai and McDaniel looked solid and should help us this year.

Merling has been too quiet.

Our interior OL still isn't getting enough push.

People jumped the gun on Lex Hilliard. He won't make the team.

Penny will win with his decision making before he ever wins with that arm of his.

I'm not sure what to make of Henne yet.

I actually noticed Merling doing some positive things last night. The announcers didnt mention his name a lot, but he was still making some plays. There was one play specifically where there was a late handoff or draw type play. Merling was in the backfield quickly and actually ran the running back down from behind about 2 yards up the field. I also noticed him applying pressure a lot. I thought our pressure off the outside was fantastic and probably the strong point of the game.

I agree with that 100%

We had better pressure on Tampa than we did against Carolina. Both McCown and Freeman played terrified. Just look at their eyes, they were scared because they were getting beaten up. Both of them were happy to get off the field.

Early in the game there were instances where they had only 3 rushing the passer.. I don't know why, because they brought more people early in the game against Carolina.. But later in the 1st quarter, and the 2nd quarter, Delhomme had all day to throw when they didn't bring anyone.

Maybe the coaches just wanted to see the package. But you will not get to the QB consistently only rushing 3. They started to bring 5 in the 2nd quarter and they dominated through the rest of the game last night. They were collapsing that pocket early and Tampa's QB's were running for their lives.

I think the pass rush this season will be quite good.

Soooo tired of seeing Ginn make that falling catch so that he doesn't take a hit. Man up and get some YAC for once in your life!

Thats real easy to say sitting on your couch.
I bet he would have caught and ran with it if the ball got there before everyone on the field was around ginn. Penny leaves his recievers out to dry, thats always been his problem. Watch any great smaller wr who has had a long career, By not taking thos huge hits for an extra 2 yards there preserving their playing longevity. tory holt it the king of it.
The fact of the matter is should ginn throw his body out there during a pre season game for an extra 3 or more yards ? no it's retarded. (not to mention he was DIVING for the ball) If henne or a stronger armed qb threw that pass it would have gotten to him quick enough that the db's would nto have as much of a cushioned reaction time becasue of how poor penny's velocity is.

oh and for the facord i would take braylon edwards over either of those 3 rb's any day.
he may drop some passes but hes a true elite reciever. not his fault hes on the 2nd worse team in the toughest division deffensivly

To me and remember this McDaniels is a play maker I have been watching him and he is good really good way better than Merling .... Damn Harline was impressive really like him didnt know much about him and people were saying negative things about him but from what i saw nothing but good things good job... Sean didnt look like he did in the other game but lets see. V Davis has look pretty good too but our Safety Wilson has not done anything spectacular I like the other safety Clemons guy is everywhere. Hope it all gels soon so we can dominate and quite the Haters

It might be that RB is not the most instinctive runner in the world, but he is the complete package - ife healthy. He can catch, he can pass block and that is why he was the best back out of the 3.

Smith was actually a tad fortunate last night. He was beaten deep at least once (ball over-thrown) and his WR came uncovered a few other times but no throw. He was “good” last night but not without some issues to address IMO.

Too me the throw looked low and Ginn had to go down to get it. I didn't have a great look at it, but that was my impression. Penny may have been throwing low to keep it away from the D or maybe he missed a little.

My bad on Merling - he was more active than I remembered (gawd that game was annoying to watch with all the rain/penalties/delays/Aikman and Buck/lack of Phins offensive plays.

Clemmons was also good - forgot to mention him.

Good Lord, I'd HATE to see Edwards on this team, I get to watch his terrible play all the time. He's great at making spectacular catches but he drops routine catches every game. Ronnie Brown is MUCH better. I can't believe anyone would change that.

Hartline and Sean Smith are 2 of my favorite players now, and I'm hoping Davis can really turn it up. I think it was a good rookie class though.

Your assessment of Vontae doesn't make sense to me. You say he has all the skills needed etc, yet he isn't the real deal?

I think he ment that Davis won't be the game-changer you hope for out of a 1st rounder and while I tend to agree, we have so much time to watch him grow that anything is possible.

Unlike Jason Allen, Davis' game is strong enough to warrant play time. It's far from irrational to believe that he'll only get better, smarter with experience. But as stated, anything is possible.

He's got skills but he still doesn't have the polish yet and isn't gonna dominate from the get go. At least thats what I think he meant.

There's a difference between having all the skills and being a complete product.
