I want to preface this post with my thought process last Sunday morning before kickoff against the Lions. I was excited, in fact very excited, I had not had so much hope i was about to watch the Dolphins win a game in a long time. Os had a full week of practice with the starters and Wake and McCain were coming back, we were at home, against a team with a losing record, it was perfect. I really thought we were gonna beat the Lions, honestly I thought we would win convincingly. Sadly I was wrong.... very wrong.
With the direction were heading, mainly due to injuries and shotty playcalling, losing this Thursday is a very real possibility. To compound the injuries, were playing the Texans, who for some unknown reason usually have our number. If we are 4-4 at the midway mark, my initial thought process starts to look to the future for optimism.
Let's face it, this team has no chance at winning a Superbowl imo, absolutely no chance. The aforementioned injuries and Gases playcalling, added to one of the league's worst offensive lines and a defense who is bipolar on game days, it makes me take a step back and look at our team from a different perspective.
Then I read the Dereck Carr thread which is ridiculous, but it made me wonder if the Raiders are actually doing something right. Then they trade Cooper to the Cowboys for a 1st rounder and now I get it, Gruden is tanking for the rest of the season and would love to trade Carr for a 1st rounder, he already has three 1st rounders in the 2019 draft, why not dump Carr off to the Dolphins too. The fact the Raiders got a 1st for Cooper is amazing to me, I would be beside myself If we traded our 1st rounder for Cooper, he just not worth it and is liable to drop 3 passes a game, imo hes a liability, the Cowboys got robbed.
So back to the Dolphins, if we lose Thursday and are 4-4 with half of our starters still injured, should we really try to keep winning? It's obvious the Raiders have actively started to lose intentionally, would it be in our best long term intrest to follow suit? I hate losing but I hate going 8-8 more than i do going 4-12 honestly, call me a bad fan, but we go 8-8 or somewhere close repeatedly and nothing ever changes. Every year, for 20 plus years it's been the same struggle to get close to 8-8 and in doing so we ruin our draft capital and still dont have anything to celebrate.
It has me wondering if I'd rather be 4-4 with all the issues were facing or be 1-6 like the Raiders and have FIVE 1st round picks in the next 2 drafts. I'd probably take the bad record and the picks.
I love to see the Dolphins win games but where we are now, without a franchise QB and needs all over the roster, I think it might be time to focus on the long term future.
I know I'm opening the flood gates with this post, but if were better in 3 years from now because we had a bad 2018 season, I'd happily take it.
