Thoughts on the Dolphins to date?

We've been mediocre for the last five years. I haven't seen anything to make me believe we won't be mediocre this year as well.

I'll believe it is going to change after I see it change.

Spoken like a true Dolphins fan.

I agree with your mindset and evaluations but I also have a bit of blind optimism that I've underestimated our strengths and that maybe some statistical anomalies might actually work in our favor this year.

Way too early to tell. However, I remember the good ole days, when I'd get excited about every offseason move, convinced they were going to make us contenders. I could see the GM's and HC's plan unfolding and just knew it was going to work this year.

But then when the season started, usually relatively early, reality would set in.

What we know now is?

Dallas Thomas might not actually be a bust, he was injured last year (how was that not mentioned anywhere I recall?)....

Corners. I think Finnegin was a reach and there where better options out there. Most people think this was the worst offseason move for the Dolphins. The signing is uncharacteristic given the Dolphins have shown to be frugal, they over-payed for Finnegin in most peoples opinion.

Thought on the state of the team?

Dude, If Finnegan is fully healthy, he can be very good. He's the same age as Grimes and has been a consistent big contributor until last year when he got injured. He is very feisty and will irritate the hell out of opposing teams. I expect that Jamar Taylor will be the 2nd CB with Finnegan playing nickel. If Finnegan can't recapture his health, we just blew $5M. But I expect that he will be itching to get out there and prove he's still got it. There is a reason why St Louis paid big $ to get him, he just needs to be fully healthy.
And I think that you are over worried about Caleb Sturgis. He lost his mojo mid-season and struggled but he should be fine. I expect him to have learned a lot from his first season. Roast me if I'm wrong but, he finished the season looking much better and some of his misses were close in windy conditions. He's decent - just be patient. His best asset is his temperament.

If you see it change, it's already happened..................

Beats the hell out of the misguided blind optimism of the most of the posters on this board. It is hard to be disappointed when you expect continued mediocrity.

Then why bother even being a fan? Find an another interest in your life.
Being a phins fan is a nice diversion for me. I work 60+ hrs/week and following offseason moves, the draft and football season is just entertainment and recreation. Don't make it more than it is.
Of course, im also 52 and have been a fan since 1970. Ive been fortunate to have witnessed this great franchise since it's glory years.
I remains optimistic. Every franchise goes through periods of success and failure. I remember the Pats being doormats.
The Niners, Raiders, Cowboys etc have also had their share of both.

lol. I used to track every single meeting, dinner and workout of players the Dolphins met with before the draft, and then stopped after 2 seasons because there was zero correlation to all that, and who we eventually signed. I think that was the year I thought we were drafting Flacco.

I am always optimistic each year, because after all, this could be the year it turns around. And I enjoy the process a lot. This season I've lowered the bar, based on what I saw in 2013. So if they do well I'll be pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed.

Even when I'm not optimistic, I'm still hopeful. I love being wrong when I think we're going to have a crap season. I would have loved it if Sparano and Henne proved me wrong. I also enjoy the process, even the head-scratcher moves.

For me, this season is all about Tannehill. They still have some work to do on the line, but so far it's already superior to last years. Hopefully he has an extra weapon or two following the draft. On the defense, resigning Grimes was by the biggest offseason move for me outside of the obvious singing of a LT (saves us drafting one in the first, thank god).

Honestly, it may have been a bigger move, in my opinion, because we had multiple options at LT (FA and draft), but if we lost Grimes, we had what? Hopes that Taylor lives up to the hype? Finnegan? Way too many question marks with that. We are facing some serious offenses next year in NE, Chargers, Packers, Broncos, Bears, and Lions. That's 3 of the top 5 overall offenses last year and 4 of the top 5 passing offenses. We're also facing 6 of the top 10 rushing offenses. Our "bend but don't break" defense of last year simply won't work with that. Unfortunately, our LBs are still garbage and I don't like the safety situation either.

I hope we make a surprise pick and get a great TE in the first round. I know oline is the thought and frankly a need but to contender you make a move to add big time weapons to an offense. I have faith the oline can be worked out even if we don't use a first for zac martin

I agree. I've never been one who believes we should stand pat on our WR's, who I think are average at best. Here's what we need: We need a big, physical WR to go over the middle, we need a seam TE in the draft (and please don't say Clay, he's not that) who is also a red zone threat, we need to draft a power back (I love Anthony Williams, BC), we need a nasty pulling guard and we need a tackling machine at MLB. I think if we make these moves we will compete for the AFC East title.

Wow we see it differently...I love the secondary with attitude and toughness added with Delmas and Finnegan. I see Finnegan starting or in the nickel at worst.

If we can get Mosley or Borland to plug in the MLB spot this looks like a solid defense to me.

Two O-lineman and a MLB and we are good.

I never said I don't like the entire secondary, just the safeties. I'll take skill over attitude any day. Jones took steps backwards last year and Delmas is at best a lateral move IF he stays healthy, which is a big if. Finnegan is a huge question mark. Yes, I know all about Grimes coming back off of injury, but let's not act like that's the norm. Grimes was playing lights out before the injury, while Finnegan wasn't while in STL.

But the key difference between our viewpoints lie in the fact that I'm going off of what we currently have versus what we may have if the stars align properly. I'm not going to place my bets on if's. Taylor, though promising, is still a huge unknown. Whether Finnegan can return to his old form (like 4 years ago form) is a big question mark. Delmas is a big question mark. Will Jones continue to go the wrong direction in development?

And then there is the LB situation. Our current LB corps is garbage. I'm not going to disregard that fact based on who we might possibly draft.

Then there is the offense. I'm not too worried about whether they can fix the line (though I'm not going to anoint the line as fixed either). They fixed the biggest issue and there are decent enough FAs still available. My biggest concern whether Tannehill can develop further, get rid of the ball, use his legs when he can, and get on the same page with Wallace. Also, I want him to get more weapons. Always. Every year. I will never be satisfied with that aspect. We should always be looking to upgrade playmakers.

The first two picks should be O-Line.It wouldnt hurt my feelings if the first 3 picks were OL. Its doesnt matter how many good TE's,WR's or RB's the fish have if the O-Line is not fixed big time.HavingTannehill running for his life every play is what will kill the Fins season again, not the need for another TE or WR. The fins have nothing on the right side and poor depth. They cant count on Dallas Thomas becoming a good starter. It would be nice if Thomas did a 180 from last year, but the fish cant count on it.
