It's Miami's time to dominate beginning with the draft.

Here are some thoughts I have.

1. Could Sexy Rexy Have Said Something Right?
Rex Ryan is always good for a laugh. I remember when he first was named a head coach and I thought his us against the world approach would wear thin pretty quickly. Somehow he is still around. Ryan did say something recently that made sense, something to the affect that a big hit can be the biggest momentum changer in a game. Miami has Suh as a physical presence, but not much else. When I think physical in this draft I think Reggie Ragland and Karl Joseph. What are some of the other big hitters in the draft? The Dolphins need to impose their will on teams both offensively and defensively. I think Adam Gase believes in that. We will soon find out how much Miami values physical players.

2. Anticipating the Run on Guards
The importance of the guard position has increased in the NFL with so many good defensive tackles and teams attacking from inside out. Looking at the projections and rankings for guards, I think a run starts near the end of round 1. Which means that round 2 is probably where Miami needs to find a player with immediate starter potential. Maybe someone like Vadal Alexander from LSU. Alexander isn't athletic enough to play tackle, but dominated as a collegiate guard. Lots of players for Miami to choose from in R2, gets tricky after that IMO. I like the center on Alabama Ryan Kelly, but think he could go end of R1.

3. Who will be the Best Player at #13
Not sure if Miami is setup to go best player available at #13 with glaring holes at corner, linebacker and on the offensive line. That said, this isn't a one year fix so let's say the team does go BPA. Who do you think that will be? Lots of discussion on Zeke Elliott if he drops. I see him as a potential elite back, but I do think he goes earlier than #13. Could be a defensive tackle such as Jarron Reed from Alabama, who may be the best run stopping tackle in the draft. Could the Dolphins be looking to add a presence next to Suh and would they look that early? Linebacker Darron Lee has some elite skills, but is limited to weakside an area where Miami is okay. Still, I think Lee could be a 10 sack a year player if cut loose to strictly rush the passer. What about a true middle linebacker in Reggie Ragland? That's a tough call because I think there will be more talented players, but I do think a player like Ragland is exactly what the defense needs. Wildcards that others have mentioned include Laquan Treadwell and Robert Nkemdiche. Love Treadwell's physical qualities and how he wins the 50/50 battles, but that's currently a position of relative strength for Miami. Take away character concerns and Nkemdiche is intriguing. He could play defensive end and move inside on passing downs. Does he want it bad enough? What about Vernon Hargreaves, the best cover corner in the draft?

4. Where Does Miami Find a Running Back?
I don't think this will be difficult. I see Jay Ajayi as a starter so I think the team looks for a complementary back. CJ Prosise from Notre Dame looks very intriguing and could be in the 4th round range. The running back situation could change if Elliott is there in R1 or if Derrick Henry makes it to R2.

5. A Trade Down Scenario
Denver and Kansas City, both drafting low in R1, may wish to trade up for a quarterback with Paxton Lynch as a likely target. It's a long way to trade down, but Miami could explore getting a lot of picks in such a move. Who would you target at the end of R1 and what could Miami get in exchange?

6. Finally, Here's the Pick at #13
My best guess is Eli Apple. On tape he looks more like a late first rounder, but he is physical, can matchup with bigger receiver and has tremendous upside. Vance Joseph has talked about rushing the passer and covering versus the pass. In that approach, Apple makes sense.

I really think Apple will be the pick at 13. Some consideration will be given to Lee.

Calhoun from Mich St in rd 2 to fill the role OV would be okay.

The need to double up on the OL... Kirkalnd or Tretola (OG's from Arkansas) in Rd 3 then a developmental player (Nembot CU OT) in rd 7.

I hope there is a huge frenzy run on OL and DTs, which would leave the playmakers for us!

OT Nembot has great size and strength, very aggressive, but footwork is lacking, not a great kick slide and he lunges too much. Yet another guy I look at as an intriguing Guard prospect like Whitehair and Shon Coleman. Coleman can play OT, lunges too much as well, but he's such a dominating run blocker and that makes me want him at OG and Billy Turner back to OT.

Karl Joseph is probably my favorite player in this draft, and should easily be a 1st rnd pick.

The only reason you may land him in the 2nd is he's coming off an injury and because his size. The smart teams will look right past that.

Joseph is going to find a smart team who will use him in a honey badger role, where he can line up as a safety, a outside linebacker, and maybe even in the slot.

Dumb teams will look at him and think, "omg he's too small, I don't know where to play him."

Heck, if Joseph played for Ohio State I bet he could of done a better job at outside linebacker than lee. Joseph is that good and has that kind of versatility.

I know you're a big fan of Joseph and I can see why. Unfortunately, I don't think Miami will go safety in this draft. Joseph and Su'a Cravens both interest me because of their flexibility, perhaps the Dolphins can see beyond a traditional role?

By the way, Ragland is one of my favorites probably for the same reason you like Joseph. I just think he's better than the sum of his parts, but I understand he is not the athlete some of the other linebackers are. Still, a draft that started with Ragland and Joseph would do a lot to add toughness to this defense. I look at this as more than a one year build anyway.

Here's my thought on offensive lineman. Yeah, it's not an exciting pick but if you have a lineman that can hold a block for an extra second or two that can be the difference between a big play or a negative play.

As far as defensive tackles go, those that cam wreck havoc in the middle are very valuable. This draft has a few guys who can do that.

I do understand wanting playmakers, but not many teams win without above average play on the offensive line or up the middle on defense.

Look at the sb teams: Sea, Den, NE, Car, even Pitt and NYG. No need to overly worry abt. The game is not won at DT and OL.

That argument really doesn't hold. Carolina probably had the best duo of defensive tackles in all of football. Short was absolutely dominate in the playoffs for the Panthers.

In fact, Carolina didn't have a lot of talent at the skill positions on offense particularly at wide receiver. Says a lot for how much Cam Newton meant to that team and the amazing season he had.

Denver also had talented defensive tackles. Look what Jackson got paid by Jacksonville.

Both teams also ran the ball well. I think Carolina led the league in rushing, although again Newton played a big role there.

I really would like Conklin be our pick in the first round and Fuller in the second.......after that why not scooby wirght and my favorite for the later round Doughty

Agree on Joseph. Particularly after watching his 2015 games, he looks like a top-15 player (assuming his injury is healing well). I do agree that Joseph plays with more heart than Lee, but Joseph plays with more heart than guys like Ramsey and Jack, too. He plays with uncommon fire, and while I think he deserves praise for it, it's a rare trait, so I wouldn't knock other players for lacking it - or having less fire. To put it in another light, Randy Moss never played with the fire that Hines Ward did.

I don't think you get Joseph in the 2nd. Safeties are too rare, and he's too good.

Yeah I agree.

As for lee I wasn't really knocking his heart, I just think Joseph is that good. Kid just has those pure football insticts that players only get if they have played for a long time, and loved every second of it which explains why he was a captain at WVU. The big hits are great, but those instincts are what really sets him apart.

There is growing demand for his kind of versatility, so if he got drafted much higher in the 1st rnd than most people expect I wouldn't be surprised one bit. But a lot of these older GMs and coordinators are still stuck in there ways so who knows.

It's also inevitable that he will probably have a lot of injuries. He's as much a hazard to himself as he is to ball carriers. GMs might be scared to draft him high because of that.

I actually like that he's small, you never see the little bastard coming.

.

Yeah, that's the biggest concern. I hope he goes to a team that's a little more up to date on tackling techniques (Seattle for example). He'll need to make some minor adjustments to his game in order to stay healthy, but he has the quickness and acumen to do that without it hurting his game too much. He'll need to pick his spots, but he's much more than a big hitter.
