Beastin'
Wow, that was fun yet painful in the end, let's get to the good and the bad.
Thumbs Up For:
Offensive Line - The oline really responded after they struggled last week. Most nitably was the run locking, Smiley really stood out with his pulling ability especially in the wildcat. We gave up one true sack when Mathis got wide on Carey and got a hand on the ball, Penny could have stepped up but it was just a good play by Mathis. All in all great game by the hogs up front.
Running Backs - Ronnie was beastly, Ricky was good as well, even Cobbs had 20-something yards on 2 carries. They were breaking tackles and showing good vision all game. Combine a good Oline, with good RB play you end up with over 230 rushing yards. Plus Ronnie continues to show he's got the power and determination to punch it into the endzone when given a chance.
Offensive Philosophy - Not playcalling, but philosophy. It seems we went into the game attempting to get the ball into the hands of our offensive playmakers. Therefore Ronnie, Ricky, and Ginn were the focus of our offense, and we were able to move the ball consistently. R&R were getting us in 3rd and shorts and Penny was getting the ball to an open Ginn to convert.
Now the Thumbs Down For:
Entire Defense - No excuses about being on the field too long this game. We blew coverage, got minimal pressure (though Manning knows how to get rid of the ball quick to prevent taking sacks), missed tackles, and couldn't cover. And the guy who stood out most of that awful performance was....
Gibril Wilson - Ugh, out of position, missing tackles, taking poor angles, he was a hot mess out there for the 2nd week basically. Time to replace him? Maybe but we really don't know what to expect out of Culver or Clemons. His attempted tackle of Clark on that first play was not only weak but idiotic. He was the last guy to beat, so the fact that he left his feet was dumb dumb dumb, he can run with Clark, he should have tried to wrap him up to at WORST slow down Clark till the cavalry arrived, ugh.
Situational Playcalling -I loved the commitment to the run all game, but still some questional play calling. That 3rd and 6 where we ran the ball is a defeatist attitude, its saying let's settle for 3 so we don't make a miatake and score nothing. **** that! Go for the juggular, enough of this wussy attitude! Then that last drive was gross, we ran too many times, couldn't get the play off before the 2 min warning, too slow to the line, just sloppy and ugly.
I will address Ted Ginn, he should have caught that pass at the end, coverage was fine, but he got both hands on it he should have caught it. But he also did things well, got open all day, and got is a lot of first downs. Finishing over 100 yards receiving could have put him on the thumbs up list, but dropping that pass could have put him on the thumbs down list, put em together and he's on neither list. Also that first pass he missed in the endzone was just out of reach, I can't knock hom for that, he could have layed out but then would have most likely been out of bounds.
Tough loss though, Defense regressed, Offense progressed. Can we put em together next week???
