As of now, we have roughly $11M in cap space, without Wheeler and Bowman. In 2016, we have over $18M including Pouncey, and in 2017 we have over $90M left. Suh is included in all numbers.

IMO, the Pouncey deal was good but, gained us nothing this year. His cap hit is the same as if we did not extend him. I was looking to save $3-4M, and we did not. I was looking for more space for a FA, trade or, moving in the draft which "could" cost a few million more than our #14 pick. I expected more than staying the same. Any money not needed will be rolled over to pay the same. We could have done better.

Here's a bit of speculation, with no facts at all to back it up. As you see in the link, we only have 13, now 14 with Pouncey, under contract in two years. The only one we have to keep, on the cap, is Suh.

I'm likely reading something into this which is not there but, it sure does seem strange with basically nothing committed past the next two years, and Philbin getting an extension to last that long.

Just some idle chatter with nothing to really talk about but, had a bit of my interest.

You cannot always kick the can to next year. If we saved $3-4 million this year it just shrinks next years cap that much. Or the following year when we have next to nobody signed. We don't need a bunch more FA this year. Maybe a WR or a guard, but we aren't going to spend big. It's time to turn to the draft. Only way we were going to do better on Pouncey's deal is if we could have gotten him to sign for less.

My point is that the cap space is the same and of no benefit. Pushing more money to next year gave us nothing but options. If there is no need, the space rolls over and does not matter. IF we do need the extra space, we do not have it.

"Better to have and not need than to need and not have."

No brilliance in this quote, just something I remembered from some guy trying to sell me insurance. :)

It's clear to me tannenbaum is working a plan. Next year is not an issue like media is pushing. The fact we extend pouncey out without costing us more while spreading it out more equally is not bad.

I think we can garnish from this that they don't feel they need the cap space this year, and they aren't spending significantly more money on 2015. I agree with what you are saying about flexibility. They have clearly decided that spending significantly more $ on 2015 isn't in the budget, and the $8 million or so plus Wheelers $ is enough to cover the draft class possible post-draft bargain basement free-agents they need to fill the roster.

IF we were to move up to #4 in the draft, which has been rumored, that will cost a few Mil more than #14. Why not try to go with the option of pounce for less this year?

Because they probably have no intention of trading up to number four. I can't possibly see how they can afford to spend the draft picks to do so. With what Pouncey, Tannehill, and Suh are going to cost us the next 4 years, we need as much young, cheap talent as we can get. I don't buy any of the trade up rumors at all. And I'll be disappointed if they do.
