It was written in Claytons blog that Parcells & Co. wanted McCown for the #3 QB but he was unwilling to take a pay cut and be the #3QB. My question is wouldn't it have made more sense to put McCown (an experienced backup) at the #2 and Henne as the #3 and let him learn all year. Instead we settled for a guy we didn't really want at #3 and if something happens to Pennington Henne could be thrown into the fire as soon as game one(Wasn't this the mistake everyone including Parcells said we did last year with Beck;throwing him in to early?) I feel Henne has the potential to be a good Qb for us in the future but in preseason it seemed as though he was still learning. Does anyone else feel putting Henne at#2 could be a mistake by jeopardizing his future?( how we saw with Beck,Harrington, etc.)Also we lost a backup in McCown.

or wouldnt you rather give a kid who has improved and worked hard, that earned the #2 spot, the #2... instead of dropping him to #3 jsut to keep McCown who you really dont want too much on the team.... that would be great for Henne and his touches in practice and his ego.

I thought he came here too play NFL football. I wouldn't describe being given playing time as "thrown too the wolves." If he was too be a "student" for a year then I would think he would have too settle for far less money. Sparano obviously felt that he could work with Beck better as #3. No matter what choices are made there are going too be fans who disagree.

I think I would rather have the veteran backup and the option of letting our future QB learn and putting him in when we felt he was ready not because we have to.

i've seen stuff this pre-season that he could come in if pennington gets hurt. but he has earned his #2 over mccown and beck... you cant put him at 3 and mccown at 2, cause it would just be lying to both of them really... thats not right. plus if you do that, Henne barely gets snaps in practice cause you have to practice McCown with the second squad, third stringers barely get snaps.

I think Henne has the mental toughness to overcome that scenario should it happen. Beck obviouly didn't and his problem was/is that he got flustered. Henne will not get flustered. And it wouldn't be asurprise to me that if somebody like maybe Chris Simms gets released, we try to pick him up.

I understand your thinking IF it is a certainty that Pennington gets hurt... he has a history no doubt but the fact is a young QB has to learn (by playing) sometime... I actually agree with the 'seasoning' of young players at that position and letting them learn.

In this case I make an exception since Henne not only comes from a big program like Michigan but also because I don't think there is as much pressure as last year... Beck was forced in when the losses were stacking up and the pressure was mounting just to win ONE game... There was NO defence to speak of so it was up to the offence to get it done... This year I think the defence might be able to steal a game or two and it is a VERY different situation from last...

Wasn't Rivers in San Diego the number '2' from the jump? I could be wrong...

I hope your right about Henne's mental and that he can learn quick if he has to get thrown in.

Good point about Henne coming from a big program. Hopefully, that helps him.And I realize it hinges on Penny getting hurt but i felt it is a realistic scenario with his health concerns.

good point Henne been playing Michigan for 4 straight years... and i have noticed he has not been buckling under pressure by heaving long balls for INT's like he used to in Michigan. he's still learning, and hopefully he doesn't have to play due to Pennington injury, but as said already, its a realistic possability.

Look, he obviously showed enough(too the coaches, to warrant this), or it wouldn't have happened.

I'm not surprised at all, in reality, he was in the mix to start.

Clearly, Henne is not Beck.

I know it's a little ridiculous but I really LOVED the way Henne responded to the fumble against New Orleans with two straight long drives for scores. Couple that with the poise he has shown (and he did get alot of playing time, they really looked at him) and I am at least optimistic he has the character to play in this league.

That's generally the best option if you have a QB that needs to develop. I think Henne convinced the staff that he was ready and could be counted on to be #2, making McCown expendable. Beck becomes the young guy who can sit and learn because he isn't ready.

Hopefully, they know what they are doing. If Pennington gets hurt, Henne better be ready.

Would anyone really want to see McCown in there before Henne? What would be the point of having the journeyman be ahead of a kid who could have a bright future?

I think Henne is probably much farther along than either Romo or Brady were as rookies.

He started all 4 years at Michigan and played his senior year with a dislocated shoulder. His game went down, but he proved his toughness.

I figured they would keep McCown and trade the other guy, but I think they aren't in a big hurry to trade Beck. He is a 2nd round pick from just a year ago so he has much more value. He might all of a sudden hit his learning curve this year & actually have real value next year, you never know. He is older and has been around for 2 years already, so I doubt it but it could happen...
