Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland is calling on WR Ted Ginn to take a major step forward in 2009.
"Teddy is going into his third year and I think it's time for him to really show what he was drafted here to do," Ireland said. This is a make or break season for Ginn, as the Dolphins will begin pushing him down the depth chart if he can't emerge as a consistent playmaker.

The Dolphins are reportedly targeting USC MLB Rey Maualuga in the first-round of the upcoming draft.
Picking at No. 25, they would likely have to trade up to get Maualuga after his impressive Pro Day last week. At 6'2/255, he's the kind of big, physical linebacker Bill Parcells has traditionally sought.

USC LB Rey Maualuga scheduled to visit on Tuesday

by Edgar Thompson
The Dolphins will spend Tuesday with one of the top defensive players available in the upcoming draft and seemingly a long shot for a team with the No. 25 pick.
USC inside linebacker Rey Maualuga, the 2008 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, is projected by many draftniks to be selected in the late teens, at worst. But even if he doesn’t fall to the mid-20s, Bill Parcells and Co. might consider moving up to grab him.
Maualuga will be visiting South Florida Tuesday so the Dolphins can get to know him better, according to an NFL source.

One NFL insider believes Maualuga, an unrelenting linebacker in the mold of former Trojan Junior Seau, is the Dolphins’ target during the first round of April 25-26 draft.
But ask 10 experts who Parcells and Jeff Ireland covet with pick No. 25 and you might get more than a half-dozen different answers … Illinois CB Vontae Davis, North Carolina WR Hakeem Nicks, USC LB Clay Matthews, Connecticut CB Darius Butler, Northern Illinois’ Larry English and so on.
Maualuga doesn’t seem to fit the team’s most acute needs, cornerback or wide receiver. He isn’t the big outside linebacker with pass-rushing skills who could give Joey Porter some help - especially given Cameron Wake could need a good bit of time to adjust from the CFL to the NFL - and maybe eventually replace Porter, 32.
But Maualuga could be the kind of big (6-2, 255), physical linebacker Parcells won’t be able to pass up, considering his eye for game-changing players at the position.
Maualuga injured his hamstring at the scouting combine, but ran the 40 in the low 4.6s at USC’s Pro Day last week even though he wasn’t quite 100 percent.
The 2008 Bednarik Award winner as the best defensive player in the country, Maualuga had 273 career tackles, nine sacks and five interceptions in his career while surrounded by an all-star cast of talent at USC.
In the Dolphins 3-4, he could line up inside next to Channing Crowder, who is more run-stopper than a playmaker (1 1/2 sacks, 0 INT in for NFL seasons) like Maualuga.

Would love to see Maualuga in a Dolphins uniform, but don't see him lasting past the top 20. But you never know with the draft...stranger things has happened...

It would be a miracle if he fell to us at 25, but on the subject of Ginn. If he doesn't step it up this year, he is outta here.

I think the only way that Ginn would get cut is if he gets worse from last year. If he plateaus next season then his future won't look as bright but he would still be a useful player to have on the team.

I still don't think Ginn can be cut until he is given the opportunity to show off his strengths. He can't do that until he gets a quarterback who can get him the ball down field.

I'm still not too comfortable with the idea of taking a guy in the first round that has to be babysat in order to keep him out of trouble.

But, he would bring some hard hitting to our defense. Intimidation is a good thing.

get Chad Pennington to throw more balls his way and then we will be able to tell if he's made the kind of progress Ireland expects. if Pennington keeps spreading the ball around so much I don't think Ginn can help much.

As much as I like Penngton I have to agree he wont get a fair assesment until you have a QB who can hit him in stride 40 yards downfield....to many time Ginn was open but to far down the field or had to stop to make the catch.

i agree Ck. I just saw the video on you tube of him coming up behind erin harris (side line reporter) and pretending like he is grinding on her and that scares me. Pretty imature and shows bad judgment. Please dont take him in round 1 fins.

After seeing Brady Quinn plummet I think anything is possible in the draft.

Exactly.

The print media says we are targeting someone anytime we visit for a workout.:rolleyes2: This is getting a little bit ridiculous.
