I thought people might want to know...I know I did.

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.
Two Clubs

  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  5. Strength of victory.
  6. Strength of schedule.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  9. Best net points in common games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss
Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).
  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).
  12. Coin toss

Wow, if it ever came down to a coin toss...how awful would that be to NOT make the playoffs due to a flip of the coin?

it would suck, but then again, hey, we should have won that 1 extra game...

Perhaps not letting Houston drive down the field and beat us by 1 point... see how bad you can get screwed sometimes.

It's kinda crazy when you think about it. If jets, pats, the fins all win out (except for last game of the jets)...we end up with a 3-way tie for 1st. we all will have split our head to head games. Both the pats and the fins will have the better division record so, we'll be the leaders. I'm pretty sure we will tie in common games as well as conference record...

finally we come to the scary one...
strength of victory... here we fall (as it stands now)
the pats score a lot more than us and win by bigger margins.

So, I guess it would be best if the pats lose along the way to make it easier for us...otherwise we better start running up the score as much as we can.

Actually all 3 teams would be 4-2 in the division . . . but the Fins would definitely have a better "common games" record because we lost to Arizona . . . however the Jets lost to Denver, Oakland and San Diego . . . 3 teams that we beat . . . so we win the tiebreaker over them . . . we also win the conference tiebreaker for good measure.

For argument sake . . . if New England wins out . . . they lost to San Diego and we lost to Arizona . . . so that is a tie . . . however being that we lost to Arizona . . . that means we went 8-4 in the AFC . . . and New England would have went 7-5 in the AFC (undefeated against NFC west)

So we would win that tie breaker . . . so the Fins are in a good spot, and win the division if they win out. They own all of the tiebreakers within the division.

actually we have the better conference record than the pats b/c one of our losses came against arizona whos not in the conference. so if we all finished tied we should win the tie breaker.

Actually if we all three win out (which I highly doubt will happen) we all three will end with the same division record, two loses. However common opponents will put the jets out of the running. The easiest way to see that is by understanding we all three play exactly the same schedule except for the two games we play vs teams decided by last years finish. Our two games would be ravens and houston, the pats would be pitt and indy and the jets would be tenn and jax. Since these are games we all DO NOT play then we are better off losing these, IF there is a tie. The reason this is is because if we lose these games and still end up tied then it means we are winning more of the common games. Got it?
OK once you understand the above you will see the jets beating tenn was a whole lot better than if they had beaten den. Us and the pats were 0-2 in games not commonly played and the jets were 1-1 so if we all three ended up winning out and we beat them the last game of the season then they would be the first one eliminated in the tie breaker.
So then it would go to a two team tie breaker. Since us and the pats would use the same tie breakers it would go all the way to conference record. Since they swept the NFC and we lost to zona we would have a better AFC record and therefore we would win the tie breaker and would win the division.
Any questions??

WHAT SUNDAY'S EVENTS MEAN
Incase you missed it, Sunday was a very good day for the Dolphins. And their win was only just the beginning. Two critical 4:00 games broke right for the Dolphins. The Steelers knocked off the Patriots in New England and
the Jets fell at home to the Broncos. What does this all mean?

The Jets now sit atop the AFC East with an 8-4 record. The Dolphins and Pats are a game back at 7-5. Now for the good news. If the Dolphins win all of their remaining games, they will win the division. That's right - the Dolphins are 4 wins away from an AFC East crown. Crazy, right?

Here's why. If the Dolphins win out, they'd sit at 11-5. The Patriots, at best, would also be 11-5. And if the Jets won all their games except for their final one against the Dolphins, they would also be 11-5. Onto the tie-breakers.

#1: Head-to-head - Each team would have split with each other. No winner.
#2: Division record - All 3 teams would be at 4-2.
#3: Common games - Other than division games, each team played 8 common games against the teams from the AFC and NFC West. The Dolphins would be 7-1, as would the Patriots. The Jets would only be 5-3. They're out.
#4: Conference record - Dolphins would be 8-4. Pats 7-5. Dolphins are champs.

So even after that tough loss at home to the Pats, the Dolphins do indeed control their own destiny. Not bad. A team that won just 1 game a season ago now controls their own destiny with 4 games left.
