Tight End and Miami

It is likely that the TEs get targeted more often in the future, with Philben in charge. I was excited when we drafted Egnew and hopeful that he could make a real contribution and it's disappointing to hear that he's struggling. Our other TE, who gets no attention is Jeron Mastrud. He's actually #3 on the depth chart and is known as a good blocker. I wouldn't be surprised if Mastrud made the 53 man squad. He might also improve his ball catching.

fasano looks a lot better right now cause egnew blows chunks...but if the defense ever decides to gameplan against anthony fasano to take him out it won't be hard...he's not a big enough threat to warrant it though...extra attention

I am more excited about clay than fasano. I think Clay will be excellent for us this year.

You know as well as I hoops you don't game plan around a TE which is why these guys like Graham and Finley are causing fits in the secondary, the game plan is creating mismatches. The closest thing to a true TE who is a moster is Gronk, he is a damn fine TE but he also has a great supporting cast, look at Mark Bavaro in 86, 87 & 88, this pass to the TE thing isn't a new trend at all, it was there in the past and teams like the Giants, San Fran and even Miami (Kieth Jackson put out some good numbers in 92, 93 & 94) took advantage of it.

The difference this time around is the fact that the offenses are putting smaller faster TE's split out to create a mismatch. Give it a year or two more and the D's will shut it down, they will add a wrinkle or package that will shut it down, then these smaller TE's when forced back inside on the line with a hand in the dirt will be useless, any decent OLB, DE or DT will eat them up in the running game.

It's all cyclical and right now the 2 TE set with athletic TE's is the hottest new trend.

you're wrong if you think the packers opposition doesn't game plan around jermichael finley...i can tell ya that...and gronk is the focal point of the pats o now...not welker...so yeah he's on everyones radar as well

anthony fasano could never in a million years sniff that kind of preparation for one player...

Nor did I say Fasano would put up numbers like Graham or Gronk. All I said is he is a very good TE who gets little respect for all the things that a TE is supposed to do. As to my comment about game planing around a TE, let me expand that a little bit, Darrelle Revis or any other #1 corner will never be lining up on a TE with a safety cheating over, you might give the 3rd corner or linebacker safety help on a guy like Finely or Gronk and of course that leaves a guy like Hernandez open on the back side.

So yes I agree you do game plan for a TE in that sense but they will never be the number 1 threat because as soon as you move your coverage inside you leave yourself wide open on the edges and the WR's will run wild. It is a catch 22 but the TE is still the lesser of the two evils so you take your chances covering the TE one on one. The LB's of the league will catch up soon enough, let's see how it plays out this year with a year of film under the defenses belts.
