Tim Bowens back at practice today!!!

Does anyone know much about the bulging disc injury? Sounds painful. Can he come back at full strength or will Tim be only 80 percent?
I've had one and they aren't alot of fun. It depends on how pinched the nerve gets. Some times it get so bad you can't even stand up, but I'm sure his isn't that bad yet. With some good drugs you can play at close to 100%.

i did not get to watch the tenn game but did tim bowens play in that game ??????????//

i think we took a BIG chance not bringing in a solid DT in case bowens can't make it through the season. now i'm not talking about a stud big money DT, but someone big like T bo that can atleast take up space and clog the middle. the thing is, bowens playing time has regressed some over the past 2 seasons because he's starting to get old and injuries are nagging him. i hope he can stay healthy cuz we need him bad.

That's what Robinson is. He's a run stopping DT and not much of a passrusher. He's not as good as Timbo but he's not nearly as bas as Zgonina against the run (Zgonina should only be in there on pass rushing downs).

Good news if Timbo is back because he's a force in the middle. Next year we gotta find another DT cause Timbo is olllllld for a DT.

I was picking the Bengals in a squeeker because of my concern of Bengal RBs getting yards up the middle which consquently will open up passing lanes.Wish I could change my pick in Finheavens football pool.

I never bet or pick against my team!

whats a bulging disc injury you ask?

Well its also known as a herniation of the disc. the disk actually sticks out and bulges at the nerve root. So it causes intense pain when you move or turn a certain way. Depending on how tight the muscles are in that area can determine how bad the pain is. Unfortunately for tim he plays a position where he has to bend about 85% of the time, so this injury depending on which disc is injured may cause him intense pain all the time. He will either have to play thru and and never be 100% or have surgery and probably be a little closer to 100% but not much. The surgery includes removing the disc and replacing it with bone, so you tend to lose mobility.

Im not a doc, but i am an athletic trainer and have seen many fb and baseball plyers with this injury

Yes, oh lord in heaven, bring back TimBo. Man I hope he is able to play the rest of the season on that back, it would be a huge lift for us.

Its good we have a fellow mwmber with an understanding of injuries.
Question: Can he play effectively with pain killers and is it permitted ?

A bulging disc is offen an incorret term when describing a herniated disc. Whats happening is not just a disc slipping back and hitting the nerve. There is a gel like substance contained in the disc which when ruptured seeps out and can put pressure on the spinal cord and its surrounding nerves. a common way of thinkin is to imagine a tube of tooth paste. To get the toothpaste to come out you want to squeeze from the bottom to push to the front. The same holds true for a herniated disc. When the gel substance seeps to the posterior of the spine it can cause pain, the idea behind rehab is to use the muscles to force the gel back into the disc. Rehab and Therapy can often cure herniated discs if done correctly and if caught in the early stages before the rupture becomes too severe. Im not a doctor but i graduated with an exercise science degree and work as an exercise tech at a PT clinic.

Thank you for the thorough explanation. I love Timbo but I'd rather rest him a week or 2 if it means he can give us more later on in the season. I don't want another Gardener type injury on our hands.

cortisone can be injected - but not everygame - and because it is a steriod it will make tim gain more weight by causing him to retain more water. Best bet for him is anti inflams - which is what i am sure they are giving him, high doses of motrin for the pain and lots of physical therapy. The therapy will probably do the most for the injury along with tons of stretching -- gotta keep the muscles loose.

You gave a pretty good description of what happens to the nucleus of the disc during a "herniation". There are 4 main stages of a "herniation". The most serious stage is a rupture disc. That type of pathology is unlikely to respond to therapy, either PT or Chiropractic and would require surgery. The other 3 stages can be taken care of with proper treatment. Chiropractors see people everyday with disc problems and the time frame for recovery varies for each person. The reason why the back hurts more after laying down and less with activity is because the disc is supplied through osmosis. As a person lays down, the weight is taken off their spine and the disc absorbs water and nutrients. So in the morning, that area of the spine is stiff and quite painful because the disc is swollen. Activity puts weight on the disc and pushes out the water that the disc absorbed. The disc gets smaller and takes pressure of the nerves hence less pain. I hope Tim gets to feel better because we need him in the middle of the D.
