Alright... I have a little scenerio playing out in my head. This is just for fun, hope everyone understands this and I dount get a bunch of whiney threads stating "we still have to win out and even then we may not make the playoffs."

Anyway, here's what i'm thinking. Lets say we make the playoffs and god forbids Joey gets injured. If Culpepper is healthy or close to what he was in the beginning of the season do we play him to give us the best chance to win or do we put in Cleo to keep Daunte from regressing or getting injured again?

I think we play him if he's fully healthy but not if he isn't. You can't put winning above a players health.

Would still like to see the guy play this season if: 1. we lose a ame and are out of playoffs, and 2. the OL is playing well and can protect him, and 3. Ronnie Brown is at full strength so we have a running game.

Want to see if he is better than he played those 4 games, so we know what we've got in him for next year. Not a knock on Joey - just want to know if we need to draft a QB for the future or if Daunte IS the future (if Joey doesn't improve more).

In your scenario I think we would have to give Daunte a try, IF he is "fully" recovered from this latest surgery.

I think they should play Joey as long as he keeps winning. But if the dolphins are officially are out of the playoffs then I think saban should put in whomever he feels should be the quarterback of the future, if c-pep is hundred percent and can compete.

Jacksonville just put Leftwich on the IR today. I think Miami will follow suit. With only 5 games left, I can't see Culpepper "healthy" enough and ready to play until Week 16 against the NY Jets on Christmas night (MNF). I figure if we're out of it, why not see what Cleo Lemon could do if they want to evaluate the QB position. No sense in bringing Daunte in for the last 2 games.

NO, I wouldn't do it yet. If this latest surgery really eliminates his pain I would wait to see the results of our next 2 games. If we win both of them, Joey Harrington goes all the way, if we drop them both, I'd re-evaluate Culpepper and possibly throw him back out there for the last three games. I think the experience would be good as something for him to build on before entering the QB competition next year in camp.

.....I try my hardest not to take either QB's side while posting and always just want what will lead this team to more wins. I have no attachment to either guy and as always don't care about draft status or what was given up to aquire a player when choosing who should play. Right now Harrington looks like the better QB but Daunte is/was?? so physically gifted it would be a shame to give up on him when all we've seen is what he can do when he's not 100% healthy.

I think this scenario is why Daunte isn't on IR right now. They know he's not going to be 100% ever this season but he could be improved over how he was at the beginning of the season. On the other hand, Harrington could get hurt and he's also never been to the playoffs. If he gets hurt or has some other issue they want Daunte available and they will play him if it comes to that. His doctors have said that his knee is no more vulnerable to injury at this point than anyone else's. The concern with the shoulder was that with his lesser mobility he was taking a terrible pounding every game. That's less of a concern when you are only looking at a few games rather than an entire long season.

Now that it is so close to the end of the season they may not put him on IR even if they are out of the playoffs and don't plan to play him at all. The only reason you put someone on IR is to make room on the roster for another player. There may not be anyone available they think can contribute at this point.

We lost Berger to Dallas on waivers. We were supposed to move up Cobb as the 3rd back while Brown is injured but haven't.

That roster spot could have certainly been used up to this point. The coaches must think that the benefit of keeping Culpepper on the roster outweighs the possibility of losing Berger at least.

Maybe because of the cap, we can't afford to put Daunte on IR. If Joey should go down, we have Cleo, but after that? First thing that comes to mind is Vick, but does anyone really want him playing QB?

Placing Culpepper on IR has no effect on the salary cap.

I know that,
What I'am saying is that if Joey goes down, all we have left is Cleo. Keeping Daunte off the IR means we atleast have a little insurance. It saves us from going out and picking up another QB.

I dunno. You could bring in somebody like Brock Berlin or Justin Holland - that was in camp - and not affect the cap at all.

[EDIT: Well, I guess it would apply to the cap. The top 51 player salaries are only used to determine the cap number in the offseason. All salaries are counted during the regular season. Learn something new every day.]

How's it not going to affect the cap? Are they going to play for free? Still have to pay them.
I think the Dolphins are contempt with having Daunte as the 3rd QB right now.

Sorry - I edited my initial post. I was under the impression that only the top 51 salaries count toward the salary cap. That's only true in the offseason.

You are correct. My bad.

I saw that after I responded:D
If I'am not misktaken, once your on the 53 man roster, your salary (for that season) is guaranteed. I think this was a change form several years ago.

I think they'll play hime when Saban feels he's ready realitive to the extent of his recovery time. We don't want him out there when he's not 100 percent.
We will play him whenever he is fully recovered.
