this was kiper's grade last year.

Miami Dolphins: B-
Running back Ronnie Brown is a complete prospect and you also have to like the intensity and toughness end Matt Roth will bring to the table. The biggest question is whether linebacker Channing Crowder will remain healthy enough long enough to be an impact pro, but new Miami coach Nick Saban obviously had no questions about cornerback Travis Daniels, who played under Saban at LSU and solidified his standing with a good 40 time. Offensive tackle Anthony Alabi is an average player and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson came on as a senior but still needs some work.

no one really knows a lot about any of these players compared to the people who's job it is to actually draft them (e.g., gm's, coaches, and scouts).

i say try to stop hating on this draft until the guys at least play an NFL down. position-wise, these guys all have a chance to make the team. it's not like we drafted 6 tight ends or something. i happen to be a big fan of the draft.

think about the last 6 super bowl winners and who they had at safety...
2000 - ravens: rod woodson (pro bowler)
2001 - patriots: lawyer milloy (pro bowler)
2002 - buccaneers: john lynch (pro bowler)
2003, '04 - patriots: rodney harrison (pro bowler)
2005 - steelers: troy polamalu (pro bowler)

safety is an important position in today's nfl. jason allen has a chance to be a great one, especially under the watchful eye of coach saban.

good post.

I find myself sometimes devalueing a saftey because of the position. Often we are led to believe that it isn't that important of a position or that average players can do just fine at it. But there is an obvious corelation between saftey and superbowl winners. It is a highly overlooked position and can make an average secondary into a great one. Just look at how New England handled the loss of Rodney Harrison.

As for people not liking the Allen selection I still can't understand who they would have liked. IMO Allen is a better prospect than Donte Whitner and if we were set on saftey I would have rathered Allen.

I'm ok with the Allen pick because we need a safety but I think there was better value in trading down because there was alot of talent at safety and very little at linebacker. I personally thought Justice or Jackson on a trade down would have been a better pickup plus get more picks. Ko Simpson, Darnell Bing, Pat Watkins and Danial Bullocks would have been available later in the draft. I personally liked Pat Watkins and care less about the 6'4 arguement. I also really disliked taking Toledo over Jon Scott (tex). I just think Justice or Greenway would have been better picks but it will be proven in time and I hope Allen is a great safety.

I might be one of the few, but I enjoy grading the draft after its over. I understand it really doesnt mean much, but Im always so interested after its over to see how the dolphins and other teams supposedly did. Mabey it casue I love college football, Im not sure, but I say no need to hate of kiper and others for grading the draft right after, for me its entertaining.

yah, it definitely makes for entertainment, i guess.

i just hate knocking our own players down before they even get a chance.

as far as the toledo pick is concerned, he is a big, athletic guy that i think will take over for jeno james at guard, maybe as early as next year. saban is trying to rid himself of as many wanny/spielman guys as possible.

I respect your opinion...But I like the Jason allen selection over trading down and I like the Toledo pick over Scott...Why?...Because it's what Saban would do...And I trust him to evaluate and orchestrate a draft more than you or I...or anyone else for that matter. Toledo can run circles around Scott and Allen is the cream of the crop...just sit back and enjoy the spectacle. Mark my words...In two years Toledo will be the premier left tackle in the league and allen will be the prototypical free safety.

i have no qualms about the draft, but those are big words.
i would love to see it happen though.

Jon Scott is a stiff, he will be nothing in this league, Toledo potentially can be great.

i dont exactly take Mel Kiper's opinion. altho people need to realize that these "experts" are NOT experts.....they are people who have an opinion, just like we have our own opinion. i mean BOOMER seems to know football better than Kiper, Salisbury and all them. Its JUST their own opinion...they are no experts. just like we have our OWN opinions

We all just have opinions, including the draft gurus of finheaven.

Saban and his staff check out these players firsthand, his medical staff checks them out, the point is they know more about these players than any "experts", and until a coach or GM proves himself a poor evaluator we should trust his judgement.

What was wrong with Kipers evaluation there? FYI: Im not a Kiper fan, i think everyone throws crap at a wall and see's what sticks but that evaluation i think was pretty good.

People forget the system or how the team is built.

Ravens "D" was built around Ray Lews, now it appears to shifting to being built around Ed Reed.

It appears Saban "D" is built around the Safety position. Allen makes a whole lotta sense.

Just different styles, nothing more.

i can't agree with that. saban's d isn't built around anything just yet. we don't have that franchise player on defense that you can begin to build a defense around. hopefully, in time, allen will prove that wrong, but until then, we'll just have the old core (zach and jt) and the new core (crowder, daniels, roth, allen).

...life at high speed

Good post 'Pac. Everyday I like our draft better. I'm hoping Allen can become that QB type leader on the defense ala Ed Reed.
